Achilles 24 Vs. Hurley 22

Hello again,
Sorry to keep clogging up this forum but this does seem to be the best place to find information. I am looking for a very sea worthy boat under £4000 but I would like to spend less than that. I have been told that the Hurley 22 seems a very good boat, but it seems quite difficult obtaining one in moderate condition at a price I can afford. I was wondering if anyone knew if the Achilles 24 was a resonable boat. I am looking for a boat that I can sail up and down the Orwell, but is also capable of some more long distance sailing i.e. Channel Islands etc... I would be very greatful for any advice!
p.s. is anyone is selling either a Hurley 22 or Achilles 24 please let me know!

Many thanks,
Ian

I have never sail these boats but in Sailing Today 117 (Sept 1999) you have the boat test of both.

I owned a twin keel Hurley 22 for 7 years and prior to that crewed regularly on a fin keeled Achilles 24. Both are very good boats.

The Hurley 22 is an excellent sea boat with a high ballast ratio. For its size it is particularly good in strong winds and very forgiving. The early boats (like mine) were built to a LLoyds standard and had a certificate and plate on the bulkhead inside the boat - I'm not sure about the later ones. Their main drawback is light wind performance due to their heavy displacement. The accommodation is also poor by modern standards but the cockpit is excellent. I understand that several 22s have crossed the Atlantic and at least one the Pacific.

The Achilles 24 is much lighter and faster than the Hurley but is still a good sea boat. It is available in single, twin or triple keel versions and can be successfully raced if you wish. Accommodation is again poor by modern standards but it also has a good-sized cockpit. They seem to be well built and quite capable of getting you safely across the Channel.

You could find boats of similar age with much better accommodation but their sailing performance would suffer as a consequence so in your price range both of these are good choices. For a more sprightly performance choose the Achilles and for a big boat feel and extra reassurance choose the Hurley.

Many thanks,
This may sound a little strange but I am on my gap year and a friend and I are very competent sailors. We are planning to take a Hurley 22 / Achilles 24 down to the Med to cruise around Itlay. From what I have seen and read on this site it sounds the most impratical boat around. However, we both get on very well and are used to sailing with each other. Our main concern is safety and so far we have been rather spoilt sailing larger boats of 32' of more. From the sounds of it the Hurley is a more sturdy boat to go for and if we do mess up and get caught out in bad weather, the Hurley, with deep keel and heavier displacement, sound a better bet. Oh, second thing, has anyone else done something similar in similar boats??

Many thanks again,
Ian

Rles 24 Vs. Hurley 22

I sail a triple keel Achilles in Morecambe Bay they are about the most sea kindly and fast boat I have had the pleasure to own and sail, I have done considerable sea miles in mine and I would not part with it for any other boat.
The only fault i consider is the accomodation it provides however I can live with that, and I consider it a small price to pay for its performance.
Kind Regards
