Question for our Solent brethren -

I've been invited to a day corporate sailing on the Thursday of Cowes week. (Even Beancounters are let out of the cupboard occasionally).

As I live in Cambridge, getting to Cowes for a 9.00 start would involve getting up almost before I'd gone to bed the night before. So I thought I'd try to find a hotel in Southampton for the night before, and get the Red Jet across early in the morning.

This is proving a bit tricky. Any suggestions for cheapish accommodation within sensible distance of the ferry?

Ta

John

Thought about staying in the Hotel on Gunwharf quays in Pompey and a Hovercraft/ fast cat over to Ryde Pier and a cab round?

Or check the times of the first Cowes Week Fastcat out of Lymington to Cowes, stay in Lyndhurst/New Forest/Lyminton outskirts Hotel/B&B , park in ferry carpark and footpassenger to Cowes?

Good Luck, it's a great shame they are treating accountants like People- allowing them a day off, other than Christmas Day-UK's goin' to the dogs, Hurumph, Hurumph /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ferry car park will probably be full that week. A new multi story has just opened in Ocean village.

Mind the traffic down there it takes ages to get anywhere at rush hour.

What ever you DO NOT park at the red jet terminal. They will clamp you whilst you are going to get a parking ticket. Not realy but not far off.

Wondered why my tax return hadnt turne up yet! I'll be at my desk, you carry on!! (Have fun)

Red jet will be very busy that week and you may not get on first one so be prepared to queue. They have sold off Red Jet 2 so only three available and you can be they have organised routine maintainance for that week!

I think the only hotels within spitting distance are the De Vere Grand (five stars, and priced accordingly) and the Novotel in Mayflower Park, which is the tower block that sits in the middle of SBS.

The Dolphin is rather fun, and relatively nearby. I agree with others; the Red Jet car park will be rammed, so I wouldn't recommend banking on being able to park there, so you would have to stay somewhere within walking distance.

If you can find somewhere to stay in Hythe, or nearby, there's a ferry that runs between Hythe Pier and Town Quay (next to the Red Jet Terminal), so that might be an alternative.

Or maybe stay at the Premier Inn at Southampton Airport and get the train to So'ton (only about 10 minutes, then 10 minutes' walk to the Ferry Terminal). This may be your best bet....

Also the Holiday Inn, opposite the De Vere.

Slightly further away are Jury's Inn and Premier Travel Inn at Charlotte Place.

There is a free bus from the Station to Red Funnel.

Thanks for all the helpful info, folks....I'm now on the case.

Cutter - Redjet's website gives a special Cowes week timetable; service every 30 mins. Your post suggests that this may be a bit optimistic - so I'll get to the terminal v.early (yawn).
