Having had a leaky gearbox pressure pipe (hopefully now fixed) and thereby put a couple of litres or so of ATF into the bilge I need a sensible source of absorbent matting. The stuff from Compass/other swindlery seems fairly dear and I want to put the stuff under both engines as well to get the bilges properly clean. Any suggestions where the matting might be available on the cheap? Tipping in a sack of cat litter isn't really an option as some of the areas are a bit inaccessible to get it out again.

Andrew,

I've got some mats from Abzorboil and they are really good. They absorb the oil, but not water. You have to buy a bale unfortunately, works out around 72p a mat though, which is way cheaper than the Swindlery....

i bought pads from Beals ( 0113 253 8888 )

pack of 50 1 litre oil-onlypads ( 20 x 16" ) for £12.90 + vat. work great They do general pads too, same price.

Beals are a car/workshop supplies place, & pretty much lowest price on anything they sell

I read a suggestion somewhere (might have been on one of these forums) to use baby nappies for mopping up oil and water under engines - tried one recently, and it works brilliantly!
And they are not expensive....

I use an Aquavac to remove spills then add it to the oil I have taken out of the engine and take it to the tip for disposal in their oil dump.

Aquavac also useful for removing other detritus in bilges.
