Hello, I am wishing to buy a motor boat next year but prior to that seeking to complete some appropriate training. For a complete novice I have had difficulty getting definite advice about what courses to complete prior to buying a boat for use in native coastal waters. Basically I do not wish to waste money on a five day course that may not be that useful. I am also having difficulty in getting advice about the preference for 'on shore' theory and 'off shore' etc etc.

I would also like to link up with a willing mentor who can give advise on buying a boat, moorings, etc. Maybe someone who i can spend odd days with learning about practical boat things. I am willing to pay reasonable expenses and really just need someone willing to share their expertise.

If anyone can also suggest good places to complete courses that would be great. I am on a tight budget and therefore need value for money.

I live in east london willing to travel 40 to 50 mile radius. Any help would be appreciated. Please send personal message or leave message on here. Thank you

HI kevin and welcome. Before you do anything else suggest you remove your email address from the post before the bots get hold of it and spam you to death. get people to ask by PM for your email

Already thought of that. Went to two local clubs, one was just really 'stuck up' and the other, well no one seemed to do much boating really and although nice they did not instill me with confidence.

Hello Kevin, welcome. The best advice I can give you is to visit this web site
and have a look for a training centre near you. I was in a similar position and found that the Helmsmans course is the place to start. It was a two day course and was very good, the tutor/guy doing the training was great, very easy to get on with and only to glad to pass on information. You dont say where about in UK you are but it cant get much worse than here in Lancashire.
But if you start at the RYA and search for traing centres you should be okay to start with. Good luck, Mal

p.s. posted 16:15 Try this web page they are they folks I did my helmsmans course with.
Good Luck, Mal /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
