Diving in here , no clue , totally green . Been in love with the sea since I first realised her existence when I was 4 , and totally in love . Only love from afar . Lived in the city and snuck away to see her on day trips to Llandudno with retirees and caught the train to Skegness which is the nearest from Nottingham.
Then an opportunity to live by the sea in Devon and I grabbed it . I see her every single day , swim , forage crab etc BUT , I havnt sailed , not on my own except in a blow up plastic contraption . I love the sea but I want to know what I’m doing , I don’t want to die on my maiden voyage so, iv signed up for the Rya powerboat course and the day skipper theory ( had to scrub many toilets to afford it ) . So I’m on my way , scary and exciting.
Anyway all of this blah blah . I am looking for advice from any captain quints out there . What else to do , who to get to know etc. ?. , as I havnt got a scoot .
Many thanks if you read this and respond, claudia

Perhaps join the local yacht club and attend the bar. Normally lots of owners only too happy to take a beginner out.
Need to understand what the OP wants to do. Signing up for a powerboat course does not sound like going sailing. So perhaps joining a yacht club that has just sailors might be pointless if he wants to buy a MOBO.
If he wants to learn how to sail then a powerboat course is using his cash in the wrong way. But then for sailing a YC is a good step if he is the social sort who can break into the social atmosphere. That can be very difficult in some clubs, in spite of what the management committees might think.

With a name like Claudia, I think he is actually a she. And with a moniker starting with "Joan", which is very different to Claudia, I think she is a bot.

Are YBW trying to generate traffic?

Great. I think you’ve definitely made a good start with the RYA courses, and that coast, those two locations plus Dartmouth, give you a very varied cruising/ boating area. If you plan to buy your own boat then you should also consider having an instructor with you for a day or two. Talk to the PB2 instructor about it.

Best of luck. It’s a great hobby / pastime / money pit.

Worth looking into local clubs, too. IMHO at the end of the day there is no substitute for experience, so once you’ve got some basic training done you might think about finding someone local that you can crew for or go boating with, although find8ng said person is maybe easier said than done. Hence the club.

So do you think that you might look to buy your own boat? If so you need to start thinking about what you want as a starter boat, and where to keep it.
