Hi All,

Got my bill for my mooring on the Orwell today...charges up by just over 10%.....wonder what we get for that sort of increase?

Silted up moorings because they dump the dredgings in the river??

Over on MoBo forum, premier Swanwick Dry Stack mooring gone up by 26%. Do they think we have all suddenly got money again?

abp I thought were told at a high court hearing that if they don't maintain the mooring they can only charge a minimal charge for administration

please quote me if im wrong but that is what I was told as they admitted they don't maintain them that was the court`s view but if true this would be expensive to prove in court
this was a few year`s ago tho

It was Ipswich Borough Council who were the losers in that action. ABP have the right to charge a licence fee for any mooring laid in the Orwell under a charter going back many centuries to which they are the heirs.
IBC tried to also charge mooring holders, and did so for some years, on the grounds that they actually own the river bed. After a lengthy legal process they lost in the High Court and had to repay all the illegally charged fees and of course their own and the other sides legal costs. Personally I received a sum of around £600 as a refund.

AFAIK ABP do not lay moorings, that may be done by local boatyards or private owners, but a licence fee for each one has to be paid annually to ABP.

I fear we have to regard the payment as a tax rather than a service. I suspect ABP are legally entitled to charge whatever they think the market will stand as a means of income generation. We all have a choice, albeit Hobson's choice in many cases.

A Council run by idiots (like most). Any fool knows that rights overide ownership.
