Well the Australians have had plenty of time to practice. The first settlement of Australia was apparently about 50,000 yeas ago (possibly more), and necessarily involved a long sea crossing (about 60 miles minimum), which is the earliest unambiguous one. Whatever sort of craft was used, it almost certainly involved some sort of wood.
