Does that include absolutely everything including depreciation, moorings, service, fuel, repairs?

Seems high.

I think my last boat cost about £25 per mile if I include all of what I can roughly remember. That's for a new sailing boat over approx 3.5 years and we motored a lot more than we sailed.

I can only think that you didn't go very far.

Interesting calc though.

Cheers

Nope, forgot about the mooring! maybe a little more than £100.00/mile then...
It's a bit of a tongue in cheek post, it's due to the fact that a few bits broke on the boat and needed replacing resulting in high maintenance costs and very little time that the boat was usable.
Hopefully the cost will be a little less this Year!

Have not dared to add ours up :D

It would spoil the enjoyment of being afloat if we knew the true cost per mile

I was warned not to do it, but jsut thought I'd kick some numbers around, just out of interest!

I once worked out it cost more per mile than flying by Concord :ambivalence:

Ah, but then you can't just set out when you please like you can with your boat.
Assuming of course that time commitments don't get in the way, the tides are right, the forecast is ok etc. Hmmmmm...

Statistics is everything.

If you purchased the boat as a means of transportation it is fair to calculate the cost per mile.

I purchased a boat as a hobby, holiday home, summer house and general place to spend free time. My boat, all inclusive, is very cheap per hour and the joy of having her by far justifies the cost.
On top of that it even moves nicely on the water and and the pleasure of going places that way.

Don't forget to include all the money you saved by drinking your beers from a can rather than the pub on the waterfront.
And the hotel room you didn't pay for every night you stayed on board.

:)

If you use the boat enough eventually it'll pay for itself...

Announcement by Concord pilot:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sorry to have to tell you that, due to adverse weather conditions, we are going to have to remain here in Paluden for a week"

Have ordered a large bucket of sand and a chicken costume (couldn't find an Ostrich at such short notice) and will carry on enjoying my cheap nights away on the boat.
Just as soon as it's fixed.
Again.

Gotta keep smiling!!

Could be worse - my project boat hasn't touched the water yet and whilst I've not added up for a while, it's safe to say it's over £4000. However, when it does get wet, I'm hoping it will go a long way before anything breaks... Thus the cost per mile will rapidly reduce and I can be smug in the fact that the further we go and more we use, the cheaper it gets! What better excuse can you think of to get out there more?

I like the cut of your jib!

Think in terms of price per hour, not per mile!

That's even worse!

I fear we might be doing this wrong because despite always having a fridge full of beer (and plenty of spares) we still end up in the waterside pubs :D
