planning to head up as far as Abingdon when we go on holiday this friday (will probably get there for Sunday / Monday). What are the public overnight moorings like in the town centre? We moored at the lock last time we got up that part of the river. Is it quiet and safe?
Also, is it best to go on the campsite side of the bridge or the meadow side upstream of the bridge?

There are always all sizes and types of boats moored below the bridge, but the meadow site upstream is (almost) exclusively occupied by LTTTs - I suspect there's not enough depth for other types of boat.

Dunno what you mean by the campsite?? DO you mean the park? that's a bit short of depth.

perhaps my memory is playing tricks on me - I could of sworn there was a campsite in the field next to the public moorings, but looking at a map, it shows a cricket pitch there.

what is 'LTTTs' ??

I think you are perhaps confusing Abingdon with Wallingford-there is a campsite and meadows at Wallingford, only meadows at Abingdon. Both have nice stone bridges. Strictly speaking, the campsite is on the Crowmarsh Gifford side of the river, along with the swimming pool.

I think you are thinking of Wallingford, that has a campsite above the bridge close to the river.

Good choice of moorings in Abingdon both below the bridge and above on both sides, the nearer you get to the lock the shallower it gets. Don't let Trueblue frighten you off by trying to bag the best moorings for him and his mates! :)

I have moored above the bridge on the side where the swimming pool is with no problems. Our draft is 0.9 M and had no issues just pull up the outdrive leg otherwise.

It was nice and quiet most of the other boats were narrow boats and hire boats but all were friendly :D

I'd never be so disinjeuous - We moor well away from other boaters 'cos they're horrid..

but is is shallower near the lock

Similar to my comment above; the lower part by the pool is OK, but if you moor near the bushes it's not quite so deep. The advantage of the park side is that it's a short and pleasant walk to Waitrose!

LTTT - well Brayman's blown the gaff on that one.
