Thinking of taking up berth in Aberystwyth.
The only other harbours in the area are Aberaeron and Newquay, both of which dry.
Although I have a bilge keeled Corribee, access at Aberystwyth would increase sailing opportunities.
What do you think?

Used to keep my boat at Aberyswyth, as well as Aberdyfi - as all of Ceregeidion Bay (except Pwllheli) it's only accessible about 4 hrs either side of HW.

The approach has a number of rocky shoals and quite a beam stream, especially at springs.

Town is very pleasant, has a nice buzz going, marina charges extra for shore-power and isn't the cheapest around.

Look also at the Dyfi estuary, probably the prettiest moorings in the UK.

Only thing you'll probably not be able to make upstream, past the quay, at spring ebbs in a Corribee, unless the channel has changed again.

Fishguard old harbour should be good for a Corribee, and probably the most likely to have room.
 
Corrbeekev just paid £2100 for this year`s berth in the marina at Aberystwyth I can get in-out on most tides depending on weather over the bar at the entrance!! If the berth price is in budget go for it -NewQuay and Aberaeron will not cost as much but berth position and tide time`s will limit sailing time -nice area to sail -availability at all three ??? and welcome to the forum
 
Fishguard Lower Town Harbour (Old Harbour) dries and has a fairly rocky bottom but it's well sheltered. But Fishguard may be a long drive from wherever you live!
 
Great place, if we ever return to the UK we'll go back there.

We were there for three years before setting off around the world (very slowly). Although we had 2.1m draft we could get in and out 2.5 hours each side of high water no problem. Other boats we know get up to 4 hours each side depending on draft and where you are in the marina.

Good town, all within walking distance, plenty of places to eat and drink, plenty of life (even in the winter). Boat club across the other side from the marina is quiet, but cheap and very freindly.

Better options than Aberdyfi as you have more options on getting in and out as there is no bar to contend with. On saying that, the 'Trap' at the entrance to Aber' can have its moments.

I recomend it, not the cheapest in the area, but the better of any other mentioned. Considering its dead mens shoes at Pwllheli, its the best on the coast and it has good road and rail access (for Wales!).

He is prepared to take a mooring which makes things easier.

We need to know the limits north and south where Kev will travel to, there are many small harbours still not mentioned yet?

With Wales or sailing and boating? I ask as some harbours are, well, a biatch to get in and out, others are ideal while getting experience. Obviously you can learn, but better if you can go for short day sails to start rather than commit for 10 hours out at sea.

Cardigan Teifi, the entrance is actually free flowing and clear of sandbanks on the whole, as the river runs out past a cliff face and rocks on one side. Some pics I've taken a couple of years ago

The entrance to Teifi club is the bit that can vary, but it's mainly drying anyway, with one channel.

I berth in Aber on the marina side - Admittedly I only live 4 miles up the road so it is very convenient! But it is a pretty reasonable spot.

Access +- 3 3.5 once you know the place preferable IMHO to many of the other harbours on the coast many of which are rather poor/could do better in terms of access and facilities.

I can't remember the costs in the marina for the coming year - but I think 31ft is about £2k6 - the marina looks after the place well. The town side of the harbour isn't IMHO wonderful but it isn't awful just suffers from being looked after by the council.

All in all just about the best place on this bit of the coast.

It is easy enough when the weather is like the photos but if there is any on shore wind, well lets say it was an exciting ride in! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Good area and just pottering around the Island (about 1 1/2 mile from the estuary) is pleasant enough.
