Just wondered if there is a web site that lists all the Admiralty symbols and abbreviations? Or is it like everything else connected with UK charts were useful information has to be purchased for safety!

I don't think so, but chart 5011 (I think) has it all.

I think that it's money well spent. After all, you don't want to be logging on to the web in a heavy seaway just to check something on your chart, do you?

Notices to mariners are available free of charge at quite some expense I would have thought. So your comment is not quite true really is it?

The info is copyright, which is why it costs. Excellent value at £8.80 from the Admiralty Chart site, or £8.60 from others (Google).

Yes it does look like I shall have to either drive 20 miles to my nearest chandler or purchase it through mail order or something! But thanks for your reply anyway.

Dave,

"Notices to Mariners" are the latest details which need to be added to your charts to keep them up to date. They can be found on <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.ukho.gov.uk/notices_to_mariners.html>http://www.ukho.gov.uk/notices_to_mariners.html</A>

The site also has details on where you may buy from and will also list all the charts that are available.

You could have a look here:
<A target="_blank" HREF=http://chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov/mcd/chart1/chart1hr.htm>http://chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov/mcd/chart1/chart1hr.htm</A>

not identical to Admiralty, but similar, and close enough to work out what most Admiralty symbols mean

I would have thought that a copy of 5011 was as important as the charts it refers to, pilot books, and almanac and it is not something which has to be replaced very frequently.

I'm sorry if £8.80 represents a significant proportion of your yachting budget.

I don't why I am bothering to answer your arrogant unhelpfull post but I will anyway!

For your information I have recently drove a 40 mile round trip to my nearest chandler in the hope of purchasing 5011...which was out of stock! I have prepaid and ordered it also.

When I posted this thread I was stuck on a chart symbol I did not recognise in my home studies, as I am currently involved on a RYA Yachtmasters shorebased course.

Its a sobering thought that there are some genuine people on this site that can provide usefull help, links and advice to the less experienced unlike yourself!

I'm not surprised that he reacted to the "significant proportion of your budget" comment. Whether intended or not, it came across to me as being more than a little patronising. Perhaps it wasn't meant like that.

Just want to add that £8 is a vast amount of money for a little thin book - the Admiralty is a business that exploits its partly captive clientel - Most of its basic info has been around for a hundred of years and more than paid for.

In the USA the freedom of information act means that everyone may copy all the charts of the world FOC!!!! And do

- The rock and shore lines do not move - depths vary seldom except on entrances that are dodgy and can change after last nights gale far less a notice to Mariners which is a week + old so all this buiness of weekly updates is really only intended for the RN and the merchant fleet who have bigger problems - I think.

My boat is full of photo copy charts and they are perfect for navigation and cost me around US$4 each - I do think the Admiralty are exploiting the situation.

Having said that 5011 is in my chart table and must be 20 years old but sometimes comes out so was a really useful investment

The International Hydrographic Office's version is available here <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.iho.shom.fr/publicat/free/files/s57int1_xref.zip>http://www.iho.shom.fr/publicat/free/files/s57int1_xref.zip</A>. It should be the definitive version.

It is in Microsoft Word format however, but if you have Word this file has the big advantage of only being about 4 Mbytes to download instead of the 40 - 60 Mbytes the PDF files on the NOAA, NIMA, Land Information NZ, etc sites that freely disseminate their hydrographic information are.

Yes I did re-read my post, but you have to agree information in the interest of safety should be more freely available on the internet. A publication does have printing cost's etc and I have no problem with that.

But in all honesty I did not expect to have people replying to my post implying that I was compromising my yachting budget over 8 quid!

In the short time I have been a member on this site it appears to me that IF people were to post each other in a MORE! friendly manner this site could be more enjoyable to use, instead of the critics sitting on the fence like carion ready to pounce on someone who's post does not agree with their liking.

Pity really as I am a moderator for another site were the ambiance there incourages friendly helpfull replies unlike some on this forum! Instead of persons jumping the gun and coating individuals, why do they not post requesting the thread starter to clarify their post further, I am sure this could prevent all those uncomfortable replies that people often get here.
