Afternoon,
I was wondering if anyone knows of any abandoned vessels in the Southampton area, or any which are no longer required. Looking for something on the cheap to tinker with and possibly make into a liveaboard. Any ideas of where to look and who to speak to would be very useful.
Thanks,

Would be squatter?

There are plenty of yachts that look abandoned during the winter, but they are not! The legal route is to look for marina's auctions for non paying berth holders' boats.

Anything "abandoned" in Southampton, would only be fit for scrap & cost a mint to tinker with!

Have a look above Woolston Bridge, thats where they all are.

I sail regularly and understand a lot of them are not abandoned, its a dream of mine to eventually get a decent liveaboard and any steps in that direction are good. No interest in squatting, its someones property. I'm talking more about the half sunk derelicts which haven't seen any love in years. Thanks

Had a wonder along the Itchen today and had a chat with some local fishermen, just thought worth a shot asking on here. Never know someone might know of something :)

Mooring authorities keep track of abandoned vessels and attempt to sell them (usually by auction) when they have given up hope of the owner ever paying outstanding fees. Same with boatyards.

I will give the Harbour master's a call tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks for the pointer.

Last year Kemp's Quay had lots of abandoned boats, but they seem to have got rid of them all now. I was looking the other week for an example of the notice they stick on them to inform the owner what's happened should he ever turn up, but couldn't find any. There were about a dozen last winter.

There are a couple here, not sure if they are for sale or not, but maybe just waiting for that elusive new owner !!!!!!!!

Wander around a few boat yards and start conversations with the people working there.

There'll be a boat from time to time where there is either a bigger debt to the yard than the boat is worth or where for some other reason (sadly often illness or death of the owner) where the boat can be bought cheap.

Don't wait for an auction as everyone will be after the boat then, if it is worth anything. Often the yards will do a deal or will put you in touch with the owner or his widow.

If you are very lucky you'll find a boat that has been really well looked after until the owner ran into problems, so won't have been neglected for long. I know of one such boat that went for a ridiculously low price a couple of years ago. It had been left for about 18 months so was covered in algae. The widow just wanted rid of it and a broker came along who bought it as a stock boat.

Beware of anything that has been neglected too long it'll cost you a fortune to put right.

Oh and another hillyard here:

There is a hillyard named Tiger a little over 30 ft with aft cabin in need of a new owner. She is full of water on the beach in old mill creek dartmouth with a broken sheerleg and rot in deck and sheerstrake. She was a lovely boat and could be had for a pound if removed. The rig is complete and apparently there are two suits of sails. the engine is dismantled and been under water... petter single...she is a mess but could be saved by the right person.
her owner is called terry and his phone number is.
07930 251951

Seems to be a popular state of affairs for some old hillyards.....................................

Best of luck, the sooner you get something (anything) the sooner you'll start saving money. A couple of suggestions for some reading for inspiration while you search that you might like:

Would be worth having a chat with Gosport Boatyard, they seem to always have a few and would probably be grateful if you took this one away:

What sort of size do you have in mind ?

Upwards of 30ft really, I have access to a boatyard and dry storage. Thanks for all the links and advice. That vessel in Gosport what sort of length do you think she is? And how badly damaged? I.e. could she potentially be refloated with some patches whilst at low tide if its shallow enough? Thanks

There where a couple for sail in Christchurch, cannot remember the yard.
Steel one and plastic one (Helford cutter), not certain what happened last time I saw them they where on Ebay.

Maybe worth looking on IOW?
