A year on How has the Fuel Duty

It hasn't.

As it happens we filled on Tuesday after a cracking run out to Cowes and back, and I totted up how much fuel we've bought this year; it comes to 1639 litres. The extra duty is roughly 25ppl, so we've paid our useless Govt an extra £410 in duty. I'd obviously rather have that £410 in my bank account, but it's kind of trivial compared to the £4k I pay in berthing, and certainly not enough to stop us using the boat just when and how we feel like it.

As we only bought our boat this time last year, it has had no effect on us at all. Plus if you find the right supplier it is cheap enough to not worry about.

I think I do actually go a bit slower. That might be old age, though.Or a barnacle.
And there and back trips are out; we make sure we spend a day or two at the other end.
I think the most expensive diesel I used was the stuff I bought pre-Nov 2008 when oil prices were high !

Affected your Boating this year

I agree with others it is entirely weather dependant.

At the beginning of the season I did try to save by holding course and speed longer but I felt a bit of ' a stinker ' to continue on close encounters just because I was the stand on vessel.

I am not so sure that the people whom it has affected a lot will jump out and admit it. I can't help thinking that there is a bit a bravado going on. Certainly my observations are that 30ft to 45ft motorboats are not moving our the marina very often. Indeed the people that I know whom use their mobo all the time are definately cutting back their speed - significantly. They are also making much shorter journeys instead of going further afeild like they would do before, without even thinking about the cost. During my summer holiday on the West Coast of Scotland I saw hardly any mobos (maybe 6 in a fortnight - actually moving?) although there were dozens upon dozens of yachts from all over the place e.g. France, Norway etc....... I can't see how people can't be affected, unless of course they are loaded and these sums are unimportant, but for the rest of us........... well for example......we bought our boat in 2002, when it was 26p/l which cost us about £1500 for fuel for the season. In 2009 and all things being equal it now costs about £6500. We used to fill up for £260 now it's £1200. As far as I am concerned that is quite a difference. But what the heck - who cares I sold it and bought a yacht! lol.

Most boats are solent based which distorts the figures compared with your own.
But looking at your figure for a boat in the solent

Based on your 1523 miles per year Power 40ft flybridge cost £2.65 mile fuel, £3.94 berthing total £6.59 per mile.

How many miles have you sailed this year ? 1000 would be pushing it for most solent based sailors and dont forget to deduct 25% of the miles as they were in the wrong direction !

43ft boat (added 3 ft for similar accommodation) berthing costs £8000 in solent area = £8 mile

Power is the cheaper option, its not bravado, the faster and further you go the cheaper it gets !

"Affected your Boating this year"

Suspect the increased cost of fuel has reared its ugly head for everyone but mainly when approaching the fuel berth.
Previously would have just turned up at nearest supplier but now will spend 10 mins phoning around for cheapest price, this can amount to 10p a litre.
However people like me and many on the Thames and other inland watersways whos boat average perhaps about a couple of gallons and hour find virtually no difference worth getting excised about.
The reduction in my boat insurance premium has virtually covered any increase in fuel costs.

With the berth holder's discount that we get from MDL the price of diesel has actually been cheaper this year than last year, and the number of hours I have put on her has been about the same as last year - down a little due to the really poor July that we had, and that all the longer distance trips I planned had to be cancelled for either weather or mechanical problems.

Along with others, the weather etc has had much more of a deleterious effect on my boating this year than the price of fuel.

Not at all - but then I am a raggie.

One could always buy red from a rural garage where it will be tax free for tractors. It would mean messing around with cans & funnels - possibly not worth the hassle perhaps?

Probably fraud as well, which is why I would never do it

You liccle liar!:p
Anyway , for you raggies I don't suppose it is much of an issue.
Personally it has not made a jot of difference.
Cos me boats been bust most of the season (fixing everybody elses!) and I have been driving other peeps vessels too:)

In and around My Marina and Area there seems to have been a little grumbling.
However boats (mobos) have been used more than usual I reckon.

I think it has been the F it Factor.
Because of the economical climate peeps seem to have not wanted to 'upgrade' to a bigger or better vessel but service and mend and upgrade systems etc, then go out and use their vessels.

Most grumbles I have heard have been weather related rather than the fuel issue.

Well, that's my view from this end of the Pontoon!
