Sorry to any who have seen this before but I have just stumbled upon the Southampton VTS web site and these photos which give a good idea of how little you can see from the bridge of one of those big scary things.
Spot the Red Jet ferry in the container ship photo!

Wouldn't you just like a crack at parking one of those things!

Umm, I wonder if she'd go through the lock gates at St. Vaast, why not, worth a try!

We're alot smaller than that, but our vis is very poor too. What I do, especially when going stern to, is have crew around on radios to tell me what I'm hitting!!

At least mobos can get out of the way quickly - it's the raggies who are sitting ducks even when we've spotted them a couple of miles away and rushed down to put our 'auxiliary power' on, much good though it does. The corner of the channel between Seaview and Ryde is one of the worst spots. Talking to a pilot about why the container ships go so fast (20+ kts is very fast compared to the max 6 a yacht can typically do) in the Solent there was no real answer (not even anything about manoeuvrability), but simply that they do so because they're allowed to and speed is relative. I took from that that they couldn't be expected to go much slower and that it's not their fault yachts are VERY slow...and I suppose he was right.
