A year ago today I decided that rather than do something sensible with an inheretence from a very high spirited person I should do something memorable and adventurous with it, and I decided I would buy a yacht. I'd never actually sailed a yacht before. In fact I'd never even set foot on one but I had done a small amount of dinghy sailing and I always thought it would be fantastic to sail a yacht into a nice anchorage and enjoy a day on a quiet beach etc.

With no small amount of support and advice from this forum, some of it bordering on the helpful /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif...(in seriousness I've had fantastic support and advice on here so thank you all very much) I went down all sorts of avenues trying to work out what boat to buy and ended up with a newish 36foot sloop that, after doing Nav theory and having some OBT I started sailing at easter time.

So, a year on, did I do the right thing???

You bet. It's fantastic. I'm a total addict and enjoy every moment out on the water. I've run up 1000 seamiles since Easter and been to dozens of lovely destination. SWMBO, after a cautious start (cautious nature!!) absolutely loves it as do the kids and all of our friends (most of whom had also never set foot on a yacht). The atmosphere in the marinas and when your rafted up etc is great. I love all the commoradare; everyone is so helpful and friendly.

Anyhow, for those who gave advice, answered poll's etc I thought I'd give you an update and say THANK YOU

Fantastic.
That is the single most cheerful, non cynic, positive and refreshing post I have read on here all week.
Weatherwise it has not been the steadiest of summers. It sounds as though you have gently introduced your family to sailing too in such a way as to inspire and build confidence.May you sail far and wide.

Well done mate, how nice to hear. You did well in this rotten summer to clock up 1000 miles. And I second Blueboatman in saluting your splendid post.
I too got into 'big-boat' sailing via an inheritance, it was the very best way to spend the dosh. My continuing obsession will ensure that I leave no inheritance at all (apart from a boat, I suppose!)

oddly enough the weather has acted in my favour - everytime SWMBO arranged to sail the sun shone!! (yes, thats about every sunny day this year we happened to have planned to be on the boat!). The weather tended to be far less hospitibale when I was out with experienced sailors which of course worked out great as I was able to build experience up without scaring SWMBO, so I've been very lucky
