Hi everyone ,
I am new to the forum and i was wondering if anyone can help.
I have the chance to buy a 79 foot , 79 tonne former mediteranean motor yacht that is in need of some serious repairs,i would like to bring it back to its former glory and hopefully when that is complete sell my house and live on it permenantly , the question is where would i the novice find books on becoming a small ship owner, and also some advice from you guys would be much appreciated. I have no nautical experience whatsoever , am i insane or what lol , many thanks in advance , glen

The fact that you have no experience does not preclude you from this project...necessarily. However, a 79 foot, 79 ton yacht is going to be a handful for a 79 year-old one-legged retired pastry-cook, with arthritis, living on a budget of £79 per week. A fair bit more info about you would be essential /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Before you get too deeply involved in this, I highly recommend that you check out the feasibility and cost of berthing facilities. For a start you will need to dock every so often, and there are very few lifts in UK with that capacity, and they arent cheap. If it needs serious repairs and its old, I suspect this might be a steel boat, and if it has had a hard long life, it may be that the hull plating needs replacing - Engine repairs on a large yacht will make your eyes water (ask TCM) and fuel requirements are also rather large

You dont say whether you plan to live in UK or back in the med. If in the UK and this boat is designed for the med, the level of insulation may not be sufficient, and certainly the heating system is likely to be insuficient.

Not trying to put you off, but make sure you leave the rose tinted galsses well alone when looking at this especially if you have no experience. Dont go for the first boat you see, have a good look round first. Probably better to buy a smallboat and see if you like the life before making such a large investment in something which you are unlikely to be able to realise its value.

HI and welcome,

A word of warning.

I take it is the one on Ebay. I believe it would be very good to have on the 5th November! This boat is a money pit. You will need a minimum of £100K to get it usable, double that to get it comfortable and three times that to get it up to Spec.

If you have access to a large yard and the skills you will be in the water in 6 years. More probably it will be back on Ebay within 12 months and you could loose your shirt.

It is a great dream but a very expensive one!

Let us know how you get on,

Paul

although I tend to agree in some repects do people realise how much a house costs in mortgage , maintenance , etc . If the boat is your dream then fight for it , but know your purchase budget and keep to it. Any electrical help , PM me and I'll see what can be done

Hi there again ,
Thanks everyone , it was the one advertised on ebay , i have had an e mail from the seller and he reckons i would be looking at approx 200k just for the engines and planking around the hull which is way off what i can afford , oh well , it costs nowt to dream , many thanks everyone ,glen
