This image opened up mental scars from learning to swim.
None of the flash buoyancy aids in heated swimming pools that are available now; back in the day, it was Mr. Gillies in his waders at the shallow end of an outdoor seawater pool, which was cleared of jelly fish.
On a particularly cold October day (hail stones) after school I attended the weekly swimming lesson and after getting changed in the draughty wooden changing hut, articulated my fear of how cold the pool would be. Unfazed by my concerns Mr. Gillies simply boiled a kettle of water and poured it into the pool. "There you go, son, it'll be much warmer now!"
Later in life, I learned all about the laws of physics!
