Last night I was out running a Day Skipper night exercise in the Solent. On our way up from Yarmouth there was a ship at anchor in Thornes Bay. All correctly lit, but it also had the addition of a single red light at the mast. Now here is your starter for 10 - what did it signify? In fact there were two vessels rafted up bith showing the same light.

red over white with no side lights is vessel fishing but not making way through the water........isn't it ?

Dangerous cargo?

Well done. It does not feature in the col regs but is now regarded as an internationally accepted recognition for hazardous cargo.

After posting I then read your bio. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Regarding the 'unofficial' red light - because Japan insists on the red light flashing there you may well find the red light flashing here as well.

Many merchant ships only have the flashing option fitted.

I thought Day Skipper had no night time exercises ... hence the name??

Just interested

However the red light should only be shown when the vessel is actually loading or discharging dangerous cargo, and not whilst at anchor.

Interseting point. Maybe, as there were two vessels rafted together they were transferring cargo one from the other as both vessels were exhibiting the red.
