A Stitch or 150,000

No I'm not, but I actually think that its a good idea. I have just replaced my old genoa at cost of a grand mainly because the stitching is all worn..the sail cloth its self is okay and good enough for the sort of cruising I do.

Im going to buy a decent sewing machine and start making my own covers etc. ( I have already knocked up a wheelhouse cover with my wife's little domestic machine) Its quite fun and a nice "indoors" job for the winter.

When my wife heard how much our local (and only) sail maker wanted for a new main sail cover. She said she would make it. I brought the material from the sail maker and she cut and sewed it together to my design. We saved two thirds of the sail makers price. She also made side spray dodgers. She also says she wents to make a cockpit tent as well. But that might be going a bit to far.

It isquite amazing just how cheap a heavy duty sewing machine is on E-Bay...However if one wants zigzag stitch, which many of us would I guess it reduces thethickness of the cloth considerably..prob due to the mechanism required.

I really must get around to buying one.

I looked at buying a domestic machine but most of the new ones with all sorts of gadgets and toys didn't look up to sewing heavyweight cloth.
Industrial machines were too cumbersome and I was advised they are built for continuous fast running, rather than punching through heavy cloth.
I eventually got a Jones off ebay... a heave domestic with zig-zag and a zip attachment. It will go through three layers of PU acrylic using a denim needle. After finishing a cockpit cover that attaches to the sprayhood the next job will be a new sailcover.
I did hand-stitch the sacrificial strip on a genoa. I won't volunteer for that again!

Pfaff is a very good brand to try on ebay, off the top modals 138, 230 and 270 are I think quite suitable, almost as good spec wise as the sailrite(not quite as large a zigzag) which is I believe a converted Brother. The above you should pick up in good condition with bits and pieces for less then £100. Its finding the Acrylic cloth at a good price (less than £10.00/ mtr) thats hard..........
