a slightly different take on a Renaming your Boat question.

I've always renamed my boats on purchase. No real ceremony, just a nice new name having pondered for ages over font and size. And a bottle of something cold and bubbly to savour, the cork of which is always kept with some "silver" in. A 10p coin that is.

The names of all my boats were chosen by my ex wife, it's linked to her real name and we just did a variation or a number on the same theme. We don't hate each other and I've no burning desire to chainsaw the name off the boat in a mad rage, even so I've decided my next boat is going to be called Iris, after my Nan.

Both my paternal grandparents died last year after 76 years of marriage, and I'm also not going to be changing the boat any time soon, so that got me thinking about boat names - but am I going mad?

So - to the question - I'm just wondering what the wisdom of the forum advises - should I change the name mid ownership, or wait until I change boat?

IMHO, you can change the boat name whenever you want and you certainly have a reason to do so. There might be some practical implications regarding your radio permits,/registration/neighbours being confused/etc. but those are easy to handle.

The thing about the old boat name that most haunts me even today, is the variation in the gel coat the previous lettering has left. Towards the end of the season when the wax fades and grime sets in, the old letters start showing as whiter areas.

When going through service records with dealers my new name confuses the hell out of them. I now book it in under the original PO's name for continuity. Otherwise no problem anywhere else as far as ship radio licensing (maintained MMSI), CG66 etc

you're v.lucky you can change name mid ownership (with I hope reasonable cost!)

When I bought MiToS I was told that I either change the name on sale for a cost of something like 300euro, or later at a cost that was similar to doing all the docs again for a new boat (circa 2K!)
so definitely keeping the name...

All my boats have been called Jinto after my late grandparents (Jinny & Toby), and with such a positive reason for a name change, I'm sure your current boat would enjoy the name change

Don't do it him with the fork will get you

If you change the name now your ex may take it as a personal slight. If you name a new boat with the new name that would be different.

I'm not saying 'don't do it'; just that if you do, talk it through with her well in advance.
