We very much like sailing and hate motoring.

Not done any great voyages, but 33 days of weekend sailing (all starting in marina or harbour therefore motoring out) and still had over 1/4 tank of diesel left when decommissioned today - in spite of extensive use of the Eberspacher at start and end of the seaon as well.

Change left over from my £25 of fuel (isn't the low duty fuel for yachts ridiculous!).

Tax on road fuel goes to the treasury and pays for loads more than road infrastructure. There is no ringfencing of this, not even of 'National Insurance'.

Tax on marine fuel likewise goes to the treasury as part of general taxation and pays for or towards (amongst other things);
MCA
Rescue Helecopters
Hospitals near the sea
The police, fire and ambulance service where you keep your boat
Other local services provided by the council where you use your boat
Trinity House who provide buoyage
The Admiralty who collate data for charts and tides
The Royal Navy that protects our waters
Register of Shipping and Seamen
Met. Office

Clearly the sea is indeed free to use, hence the tiny amount of duty on marine fuel is a total rip-off.

As for VAT on boats, chandlery, marina dues and Insurance Premium Tax.... Rip-off Britain again I say!

Re: trip on less than half a tank of diesel....

ran over to Cherbourg to meet up with the gang in September, then over to Alderney on the Sunday, down to the SW Casquets to pick up a nice turbot for tea then ran back into Poole that evening.......all on less than half a tank of diesel.

Just mention it here becasue I had to fill up Sunday to cover the rest of the season and to minimise condensation through the winter months.

There are times I wish I had a sail; and then again when the muted carbon tax on the production of mylar and kevlar is introduced maybe we will all get the oars out?

ah good point...........

'get your oars now; get 'em while you can'............... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

of course you will be able to purchase aluminium or plastic but the carbon taxes on the production of both these materials will have to be significantly increased.

Re: trip on less than half a tank of diesel....

Nice line will become available in recycled aircraft aluminium, of which there will be a surfeit after the 2014 tax rise of 9,750% on airport charges to reduce international travel and its ghastly emissions, but which will actually be spent on the redevelopment of the Olympic park ghetto in East London...

I have to admit to being a fuel miser and sailing when possible but I have used a lot more than 3/4 of a tank this season.

The tank does only hold 1.5 litres though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
