A sailor has drowned in France...

Very sad and a reminder to all of us how easy it is to slip off a gangplank or fall in getting into or out of a tender. I wonder how long the poor lad swam and called for help before he drowned.

Usually when a post like this is made there is a great deal said. Most of it bollox or ill-thought out. To be sure.

Usually people are critiquing the seamanship, saying what they would have done, berating the captain calamities, or whatever. In this case it seems a young man returning home from the pub has fallen into the harbour, either while trying to board the boat or simply while walking along the quayside on the way. There isn't really anything to discuss, it's simply an unfortunate accident.

I have lost two very good friends drowned in marinas.
In one case, we know no reason, but in the other, he was triying to board his yacht over the bows.
Berthing bows -to is common in the Med because it is easier and simpler, especially in a cross wind, but it is very dangerous because most yachts have bows much higher than quayside or pontoon, and have a pulpit as well..
A similar accident happened to another friend and he was left hanging from the deck edge. In that case, his dog "called out the rescue squad".
