The final day on winderemere before the 10mph limit is enforced, we had all better watch out because if this type of thing continues we will all be boating in the same place, luckly here in norfolk the broads authority discussed with the boating public and we have continued water skiing on the rivers but where are they going to ban next the scottish lochs of course , all of the solent !! or perhaps a blanket 3 miles offshore 10 mph ban.

A complete tragedy, and I still really do not understand why!

There are plenty of speed limited lakes, it was only Windermere that you were able to go fast on.

A complete farce. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It's dull old day up here. I've just been across to the lakeshore (at the Steamboat Museum) and counted 10 yachts, 2 cruisers (going slowly) and 2 sportboats going quickly. It looks like speed is going out with a wimper rather than a bang.
This is the North end of the lake. I might sail down to the South after lunch and see what the MotorBoat Racing Club are doing for their last day of meaningful sport.
The shame is that this ends 85 years of racing, years of world record attempts and the celebration of classic speedboating as well as the skiing.

The feeling around is that PWC's are the catalyst that led the LDNPA (Lake District National Park Authority) to do what they'd been wanting to for years.

Loch Lomond authorities are considering regulating sea planes and the possible zoning/banning of PWC's. This means a change to the bye laws which will have to endorsed by scottish parliament. PWCs cause most of the complaints re noise from loch shores home owners and account for a higher number of accidents than other water users. Pity about Windermere 10mph being so widespread across all craft though. I expect that many of them will make a new home on Loch Lomond!??

I agree. I think its shameful that an unelected quango should be able to get away with this. Bloody disgrace.

It is rumoured that there will be a Midnight Blast on the lake to wave goodbye to speedboating.
Let's hope if it happens that all goes well. You only need one silly accident.......

Re: My heart bleeds for you....NOT

We had a local TV boat programme of here. The introduction was some idiot in a motor boat speeding around the harbour with moored boats being thrown all over the place with the wash. When I asked if this was the sort of impression to give young views of the sport the programme was dropped.
If you need the speed on the water keep it out of range where it can do no damage to others. ie WASH. Then I will not have to go and rescue kids whos boat was turned over by a couple of 'adults' racing in 40 foot Sunseekers through a narrow cut (5kts speed limit). Again this summer.

I think the boaters on windermere were well aware of the speed limits already in place close to shore, the problem is that the parks authority would not allow any type of compromise an obvious result would have been to allow certain areas for over 10mph at pre set times not a complete ban.

WASH.

Viking. The main congested areas and ferry landings have had a 6 mph limit for years. It's the more open parts of the lake that were unrestricted. Wash is a problem, but as long as we have flatbottomed, dutch-style ferries, even after the limit, that will still be with us.
I don't really want to trawl over the same ground again, the speed limit is here, but it's not perfect.

Re: Viking Hordes

speed limits and 'codes of conduct' were always there and these were fine. But as a regular sailor on Windermere, the big issue was the waterskier and jetskier.

WHY do you have to go so close to the shore, especially when people are swimming. The number of times I have seen skiers run through groups of swimmers, windsurfers, etc is frightening.

WHY do jetskiers/waterskiers feel they need to go 50m from the bank....it only seems that they are after an audience.

You brought it on yourselves

Re: Viking Hordes

There is an element of this type of behaviour in all sports i have witnessed many dingy sailors and windsurfers do exactly the same type of thing there is no excuse for putting anybodys life in danger ,but to say they brought it on themselves is a very unecessary broad remark. Many boaters and water skiers including the six times world champion Andy Mapple first skied on windermere, future generations will no longer be able to get on the water on one of the largest lakes in england, this must be wrong.

I think you'll find there's more than one lake in the lake district. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Sad?.... but peaceful.

I spend all my time on my scary bit of salt water, but many hundreds of children who,s first time on the water is behind dads speed boat on holiday on a ringo etc on the only lake in the lake district which allowed this type of craft will not now be able to experience boating in this region, there should have been controlled designated areas. Our local coastal area here in N norfolk will be the next to be controlled in case we disturb the local wildlife.

Re: Sad?.... but peaceful.

The majority are good...but every year we watched the numbers of irresponsible idiots grow. For some reason the thrill of watersking for its own sake is not enough....they seem to need to wave at and impress people picnicing on the shore or dodge between moored boats.

As a sailor, wash is a fact of life, but not when boats are missing you by 20ft...they do see when you are about to tack.

I go back to my statement before, the powerboat community did not do enough to control the dangerous minority and that lead to their demise on the lake

Re: Sad?.... but peaceful.

The rest of the known universe manages to get their little ones on to the water without a handy lake and how can you restrict the noise to one specific area. You are still free to use and enjoy your powered craft on the lake but are now have to respect that your ability to make noise and wash was not appreciated by the other lake users.Last year 1,969 powered craft registered. This year with the ban 1,995 users decided that a nice quiet lake would suit then just fine.
Jetski numbers have gone from 59 to 2.Hardly the financial disaster predicted by the doomsayers.

I think you would find that the majority of lake users did not want tha ban, i have not skied on windermere for fifteen years but would have liked to still be able to, if we here in our own national park the Norfolk broads can agree to work together the rest of the country should hopefully be able to do the same, Noise and were wash are not the issue larger cruisers at at 10mph make far more noise and wash.

Bit late to go into it now. But I gave up on the lakes and Windermere 20 years ago. To many petty restrictions, small mindedness. Wardens who thought they were gods. Overpriced parking, piles of eath where used to be picnick sites, landlords who thought it a privalidge if they sold beer. Landing stages with big signs saying dont do this that or anything else for that matter. Thank god it made me escape to the sea. Only trouble is, there is no desent sea within 2-300 miles from Lancashire!!

Just heard on the local radio that some skiers have already showed a big 'up yours' to the ban by water skiing up & down winderemere at some 35mph in protest to the ban!
