Big Al has left his Rinker anchored in the middle of Loch Ness (Poetic licence- I know it's on Lomond) with 20 large stones on board he's pinched from Urquart Castle the previous evening. (To make a coffee table for a key Japanees client - but that's not relavent to this puzzle).

During the night, old Nessie comes up for a breather and tips the baby Rinker from side to side so much that all 20 stones, weighing half a ton, fall out of the boat, and sink until they hit the bottom some 700 ft down (narrowly missing some guy in a 100 year old diving suit walking along the the bed).

Now the puzzle is...........

After the stones fell out of Indiana and into the water, did the level of water in the Loch stay the same, or did it rise, or did it fall?

No 50/50's or phoning friends in Ft Augustus please).

nearly the same

It stayed the same. (Well, actually it will have fallen a tiny tiny bit, because a stone on the bottom at 700 feet down is slightly more compressible than the water displaced by that stone)

Re: nearly the same

Your getting warmer that the other two 'no hopers' above, but your reasoning is flawed. Keep trying!

LOCH NESS IS NOT A SEA LOCH

LOCH NESS IS FRESH WATER

IT'S PART OF THE CALEDONIAN CANAL!!!

Alistair should have known that at least, although I take his point about anchoring in 700ft, only H1 would be capable of that.

Perhaps I should clarify that the TOTAL weight of all 20 stones was half a ton.

And if it makes you all feel better. the boat was moored to a bouy, not anchored.

ps. Alistair I've been on J2O all these week so no alcohol!

Oops.... well let's have another go.

As Nessie has taken 'a breath of air' Displacement is greater therefore water has risen...

Re: No change NM

Wrong John (sticking his neck out), say it was a lump of lead, 1 ltr volume, 2 kgs mass, when the lead is in the boat the boat would displace 2 litres of water more due to the 2 kgs of lead, remember displacement in litres = mass in kgs

now if dear little (or big even) Nessy rocks the boat and the lead falls in the drink the boat would displace 2 litres less than it was but the lead itself would displace 1ltr - remember we said the lead was 1 ltr but 2 kgs, so water level drops by 1 ltr

see it depends on density.
