Sitting here in Milford with gusts of 36kn from the SE, pissing down with rain...SWMBO wants to buy a campervan...I wish we'd bought that boat share in Greece...back to Cardiff by car tomorrow methinks...do some of the jobs at home I didn't do during the winter (feels like winter anway)...have another shot at going somwhere end of next week (eternal optimist)... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Weather was fine in work , Come finishing time Starts to rain , Not a lot just a couple of spots . Get home have a cup of coffee , Rain is getting heavier wind is getting up . Looks like I will not get my rudder prepped for varnishing again , I MUST get the garage cleared ( rpt 100 times ) . /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Agree, there have been 3 or 4 'windows' when we could have got away but who wants to sit where ever while it chucks it down with rain and cold for a few days before being able to grab another window to do the same elswhere.

We were in the Scilly Isles last year all through June, winds were getting up to 55 knots and there were days of rain but at least we had some decent weather for half days to go sail around them a few times.

People said you should go to Newlyn - we thought no way would we want to get stuck in Newlyn or Penzance rather than the Scilly Isles.

Good experience for five weeks last year but once you've done it....

I think the met office have cancelled summer this year, we have hardly used the boat.A few years ago we were out almost every weekend.

I know the feeling. It's July 2008 and Lizzy hasn't been off her mooring once this year. It's pathetic.

Seems like it's not only the boating community. Just drove back from Milford this morning and I've never seen the roads so quiet...like a winter Sunday....not a Saturday in July!!! God help the tourist industry if this keeps up.

PS - we drove up to N.Wales for a few days this week to have a look at the cruising grounds up there , and on returning to Milford found most of Monday's visiting boats still there (including a few French boats). It looked like some of them had just packed-up and got the train home (pick up the boat next summer with a bit of luck...etc, etc).

PPS - had a nice chat with the Marina Manager at Aberystwyth. Looks a nice setup there (about the size of Watchet) and not bad access...almost full tide on neaps if no swell on the bar. Just behind the town...we'll give it a try when summer comes. Couple of yachts were digging in well at New Quay just off the quay yesterday late afernoon. But excellent shelter there if no N in the wind, so they should have been fine. Had a good look at Barmouth and Aberdovey as well. Doesn't the tide just rip out of Aberdovey!! Makes the Bristol Channel look positively tame...

PPPS - looks like the winds are going N next weekend, so we can now plan a 5 mile passage from Milford to Dale and anchor under the cliffs at Monks Haven for the night...it might even feel like we've been somewhere...hoorah!!

We have friends who run the island trips around Ramsey, and others who rent deck chairs at whitesands. Everyone is worried. Spoke to the owner of the Sloop in Porthgain at the weekend too, also moaning about business and very worried about the next couple of years and a recesssion, as well as the dreadful weather.

If this weather carries on I can see us selling the boat this year, it's pointless having it sat there costing money just to sit still /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Trouble is Mike, I'm not sure there's going to be many buyers around.

One of the reasons we moved to Milford Haven is that at least the boat doubles-up as a holiday home. Even in doubtful weather we still go and walk the coastal path, etc.

Mine is up for sale have been out in the BC twice this summer, last summer we called off our two week cruise west and borrowed my brothers canal barge on the river lea in essex brilliant no tides or wind to worry about.this year we have also called off our cruise and we are going to Cornwall by car. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

the answer is what we done for years use it as a caravan. tuck into milford its cheaper than site fees, the deprecitation is not as much as a caravan. you got something to look forward to every friday and you save on the petrol your not popping down boat every night, and if the weather right your a days sail from scillies. a day from ireland, you havent got worry about windows to get out of bristol channel. you go down in may with easterleys, and back in september with westerlys. you can get a 3month package in marina.

The irony is that i bought my boat in Milford in 2005,had a mooring off Hakin point for " a few months",we used the boat quite a lot in the hot summer of 2006 then for some reason brought her back to Cardiff, not a good move.

i bet you found the mooring fees of hakin expensive icould only afford gellyswick bay /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Don't suppose the Sloop is well-supported in the winter months any more either with fuel costs/drinking driving/ etc

Did well after new ownership in the 90s I believe

True, doubt you would sell it,ours has been on the market for ages and all the brokers have said boats are not selling this year. Good time to buy though.

I have had to pull out of buying a nice westerly because i cant shift my boat, its very depressing when you have lost interest completly in a boat. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

No, the mooring came with the boat with the understanding as long as we were off by the time the owner bought his next boat, the fact that he was in his 70s and had a dodgy knee could have been a very long time.

Tango, I've never seen it quiet in the sloop, summer or winter. And yes, it has done really well since it changed ownership. It's quite a simple formula, old fashioned looking pub with good choice of beers and good food in the £6-15 range. I like a good old fashioned pub. Another place we used to go in St Davids, the Grove, has just had a makeover, with laminate floors etc and has now more of a wine bar appeal. Why have they got to try and make everywhere look like a Macdonalds?

There must be someone looking for a really nice looking well set up Eventide. Have you tried Boats and Outboards for sale site?

She looked very smart when I saw you the other day.
