Over on Liveaboard, 2 of the august members of this forum sort of threw a gauntlet down over who has the faster machine in a bit of weather, to include both sailing and motoring.

I am prepared to fund the event, and will set the course and the rules.

The event shall be started at shore side of Pye End buoy, self timed start under sail
Medusa to Port, furl Genoa, and motor.
Rough Tower to Starboard, return to sails
Kentish Knock to Port
Galloper to Port
North Galloper to Port
S Shipwash to Starboard
Landguard point furl sail and motor
Finish at Shotley Spit.

Crew of max 4 people
White sails only
Self timed.
Proven forecast to include 20 knots of wind. Marina forecast sheet or similar for proof.

Boats may be sailed on any day, independently or in company between now and November 1st.

Gentlemans rules apply.

May I have the runners and riders?

Dunno, I have a 1976 Sheet 1406 Admiralty.
The course may be anywhere provided the protagonists sail the Cans mentioned. Bit of prudence or careful tide planning may be called for.

Seriously though. Just plotted it in my (home brewed) passage planning software and it looks like about 85 NM and, if sailed today with a speed through the water of 5.5 kt, gives times from 14h30m to 18h55m so, as you say, tide timing would be key.

85 Nm ......14-18 hours /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Pah.....Depart Lowestoft......09.45 bridge lift......do the course......back to Lowestoft in time for tea.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tides.....whats them /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Can i enter the challenge at displacement speed......I forget the speed at lower revs now but...... say max 1200 rpm = 10 kts.....might not be nice in a mobo.....and i WOULD need to think about tides... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Sounds like a wimp out to me. This is of course a Corinthian challenge, and therefore its the taking part rather than the winning.

I may be available as Crew, if contacted.

As sort of instigator of this challenge I would like to comment.

This is not at all what I had in mind - I was thinking more along these lines:

Morgana & Guapa show up at a pre-arranged point on a pre-arranged and mutually agreed time and set off along a pre-arranged (shortish) route. Wind forecast: F5
Say Shotley Spit to Medusa and back (sailing only!) - should be entertaining. Two hours tops - followed by prize giving (50p) and drinks (plenty of).

If I am getting involved in a race I want to see the white of the other guy's eyes at the start and then the white of his sails disappearing behind the horizon as I leave him behind. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

No handicap, no protesting - just get there & back - last one is a ...

In the unlikely event that I should lose I promise to wear for a week a T-shirt with the caption 'AWBs rule' - Just to be on the safe side I’ll also have something made for Neil (Something along the lines of 'Yoghurt pots are the pits' /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif - but I'm open to suggestions /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

A race on a sheltered inland waterway lake?
2 hours?
Ha!

You could arange to do this together, but the chances of getting you both out on an F5+ day are slim.

I am of course prepared to act as committee boat and create a start line and a finish line, but not for a lumbering dinghy race of rather less duration trhan a decent Sunday lunch.

I can convince the crew to do most things, but not to do a roughly 80NM to end up back where we started. If we're to consider that kind of distance, at least, let's go somewhere.

I also fail to see the point of a 'race' that includes motoring - price of diesel these days /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Seems to me that you're confusing this friendly challenge with Burnham Week /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Ah, well, it had to be in deeper water than the beach at Harwich, and also the motoring qualities were mentioned in the Liveaboard thread.
Recognising that you probably have a better opportunity by switching on the motor, I thought i would include it to keep the contest even.

Burnham Week? No, I think you only need to tack about 3 or 4 times, and in open water, so it shouldn't tax the crews too much.

I thought you big boat owners liked to do world girdling mileage?

I also calculate that at 85 miles it ought to take less than 10 hours if the prior performance claims are accurate.

Don't mind the distance - as long as there's a purpose (getting somewhere).
Sort of the difference between a w*nk, and sex with some-one else.

Aside: you can't say WHISKEY ALPHA NOVEMBER KILO on here /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Made no such claims - best ever 'long distance' performance:
Ostend - Levington (berth to mooring - 80.3NM) - 10H16. SW7
Worst ever: 16H07. No wind, dirty bottom, max 1800rpm to conserve fuel.
Yes - I time every crossing /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Which brings up a point, shouldn't this "race", to follow the original discussion, include making a full roast meal to be served when the last boat is home?? That should sort out which boat makes the best liveaboard, and test whether the fast boat is fast enough to be home and make dinner before the other arrives! If someone crews, I'll join in too!

Good point, top marks.

Perhaps we ought to be the crew on each boat to verify accuracy and cuisine.

And no Auntie Bessies Yorkshires.
