So I was wondering, in my ignorance, what DOES this particular combination of flags mean?...

Both a plain red and a plain white flag flown from and near the stern, whit a plain (or almost plain) red flag flown from the bow. This was the The Spirit of Chartwell leaving West India Docks on Monday lunchtime.

I'm sure someone here will be able to enlighten me ;)....

I have photos, but I cant figure out how to upload them here!

Here is what I actually saw...

Red over white (sorry, if that confused - but clearly a red flying from a higher, different location, to a white flying from the sternmost lower point). Not the best shot, but that's what it was.

and a solid red from the bow, except that you can just about see some white at the top - not a fluke of the picture, that was actualy there.

Oh, and "no wash" just came from a Google of CEVNI signals. Not that I'm suggesting Google can be relied upon, or anything - hence why I'm asking here:o

And for those that aren't interested in flags (or signals!), but just might be interested in a picture of the Spirit of Chartwell in her currently state if updated livery (I think it's changed since last time?), here....

I don't think they mean anything as they aren't true maritime signal flags, unless it's some regal code that's being used.

PS Only just seen post 4, and I'd go along with that!

Perhaps "I haven't got any ICOS flags, so I'll stick up what I'ge got in the hope that you'll sta out of my way"

OR that's what we do on the Mudway.

I notice he's not a member of the fenders up club.

Pretty economical with the fenders though, you'll have to give him that. I've seen cruisers upriver where you couldn't see the colour of the hull for fenders.

They were actually busy switching fenders from one side to the other, having just left the dock wall and turned through 180 to enter the lock.

Like us, probably instructed starboard side to in the lock, cus its not as far for the dockmaster to walk!

Cruel but funny!!! :D

The flags are part of the Pageant management arrangements btw.

If they are going to slap a coat of paint on it in time for the Jublee they are going to have to getta move on.
