Hi All,

Firstly a big thank you to all that helped me with my question on Windows last week. As always the forum came up trumps and the windows should be back in place next week. Now for the next problem...

The babystay deck fitting has pulled right out of the deck. It must have happened at some time in the past and i am a bit concerned that the surveyor didn't spot it but there you go. It looks as though the plate that sticks up through the deck has broken away from a backing plate that was welded too it. Problem is that when I finally managed to get behind the headlining I find that the plate is completely encapsulated in a GRP cross member about an inch in diameter. What I am thinking of doing is grinding out a section of the cross member, replacing the deck fitting with something similar nd then re glassing over the deck fitting to a similar size as the original .

Does anyone else have experience of this problem - the boat is a moody 34 and does my solution sound OK?

Thanks again.....
David

G'day David,

Seems to me you have a couple of alternatives

You could replace the end fitting on the stay with a threaded section, drill through and secure it to the existing plate with a lock [double] nut.

To remove the plate grind off the glass around the edge only and drive in some wedges, keeping the plate even to prevent deck damage; the glass should come away from the plate with out too much trouble if it's smooth.

Sounds like the original weld was not properly treated [pickled] to prevent corrosion, you will be able to see what caused the failure when you get it out.

I hope this helps.

Without seeing the problem it's a bit difficult but my first thought was to drill holes in the plate so that a sddle can be mounted on deck for the stay which is bolted through deck into the glassed in plate. You could fit nuts underneath or even tap the holes to accept the bolts threaded into the plate then add nuts as well if you wish. This may be inappropriate but just a thought. re3gards will

How about a 10 mm Diameter 'U' Bolt fitted on deck with the two legs going thro' the encapsulted plate, with extra packing plate/large washers under the nuts. Make sure the 'U' bolt is 'in line' fore & aft or if it has to go the other way, make sure the 'U' bit is angled to suit the babystay angle.
Another way may be Eyebolt of the correct strength - say 12mm diameter - again must be in line with the babystay.
Also is there a Moody website you could post the same question?
