I have for the past 20 yrs been part of the smelly brigade(motor boater) but always thought that nearly all mono hull yachts (25ft +) did a maximum speed of around 6-8 knts under power due to displacement etc, however, i noticed what looked like around 38ft yacht postively hacking along the river and overtaking other boats I would have put his speed at around 10knts if not more and against the tide !!!! was it a 007 yacht or was I just seeing things? Please explain....

The laws of physics are pretty hard to bend. My 42 ft Ben with 56 hp can beat the theoretical hull speed by a knot or two to a tad over 9 knots but it certainly pushes up the fuel bill. 26 ft MacGegors can plane but a 38 ft sailing boat doing 10 knots under engine alone is unlikely.

This was probably the MRCB (multi role cruising boat) designed by I think Ian Anderson. Boat has a hull which can be changed to a planning shape hydrolically. Seem to recall it was capable of 18 kts under power. There was one in Fareham until recently.
