My eldest daughter who was described by her teachers at Oaklands Primary school i Berkshire as being Dim,a dunce and perhaps a child with learning difficulties.

HAS JUST WON A SCHOLARSHIP TO THE 4TH MOST PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITY IN THE UK

apart from saving daddy some money,she has given the bird in my eyes to the staff at Oaklands /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

on a duller note,the little madam is trying to hit me for money already /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
Congrats to your daughter - a great achievement!

Enjoy being the proud parent - but expect to be tapped for dosh for a number of years yet...

Only one of my three went to University and that was in the days of grants /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif We bought a house in a less salubrious part of Liverpool for £29,000 which he lived in and sublet to 3 of his friends and continued to let after me left. The rents paid the mortgage but when it was sold after 4 or 5 years we couldn't get the asking price and lost £2,000! What a dump. Ho hum.

Encourage her to have lots of fun - it is not about job training in my book despite what NuLab have done to the education system.
 
Firstly, congrats to your daughter.
I would just say that some schools are particularly bad in picking up issues like Dyslexia in young kids and often dismiss suffers as slow or almost uneducateable.
Once they are picked up and things put in place, it is amazing the difference it can make. I know of one instance where the child in question was unable to make even the most basic of progress and now is at Uni.
A lot of the problem relates to resources and league tables - why spend valuable money on someone you percieve will never get anywhere when you can use it to bring a few more up a level.

Agreed. I always seemed to have trouble persuading my Phd students that Uni was for fun as much as it was for the degree. Both are important!
 
Congratulations Matt, been in simialar situations with my 3 and know how proud you must feel.

BTW which is the 4th most prestigious University? Would guess the first 3 to be Oxford, Cambridge and Durham.

My youngest is off the Falmouth to do an art course.
Just had their accommodation offer through.
nearly £4000.00 in the collage's accommodation.
Takes all her student loan.
We will have to pay her an allowance to live plus a few hundred for materials.

it looks like we are going to have to put around 500 a month into the kitty

and it looks like im wrong about Readings position in the charts,i must have picked up on the wrong table,shes doing "human behaveyour and marketing"
 
I wasn't looking to start a "My boat is bigger than your boat" argument!

I've got a mate who is a portrait painter and he went to Reading Art college (long time ago, probably a Uni now), and that was one of the top places to go for a budding artist.

I think I have been lucky in that my eldest daughter went to the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, and younger daughter has just finished a degree at Liverpool. These were medical courses that get supported (financially) by the NHS and when they finish there is no doubt about what they are going to do. Both work for the NHS, youngest starting next Monday.

Son went to Birmingham and then did a Masters at Sheffield and works in the pharmacutical/chemical industries.

Two good points.

All went to Northern cities where the cost of living is cheaper (is there also more of a culture of the working class ethos of hard work??).

All did courses that lead to certain jobs that are likely to be in demand for ever.

Of course I am happy to take all the credit for this outcome, but they did put some hard work in, and all chose their own courses without any influence from me.

we have one 4 legged money pit up for sale after thats gone,ill have two more for 2 years,then ill sell them,the lorry,the tack ad buy a bigger floating money pit /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

mr cramp,ill have to have a chat with you sometime about the NHS/degree courses,my youngest is very briight in Science subjects,we are hopig that she wil go into the medical profession
