Quite a sight isn't it. I'll have to give it a go for a laugh, and take my thigh waders so I can get to the pub through the mud! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Same boat?

Judging by the huge length of anchor chain, could this be the same 'thirtyfootish' boat doing a Marie Celeste at East Head - see ROSSCO's post?

I am still somewhat lost as to the anchor and chain. Not enough out to anchor in 0 feet let alone after the tide comes in as is clearly indicated by the relative angles. Was this the length he had out when he started drifting (onto the mud bank) ? or has he chucked 'a bit' over 'in case' or what?

We need to know!

Maybe Pete knows if this guy has ever owned a boat previously?

Looks like he's just dropped the anchor until it hit 'bottom', then left it. Probably didn't want to get his feet dirty taking it a bit further out where it would do some good.

There were witnesses, we should hear the story!

So what was it about the boaters not wanting to get their hulls wet on Sunday?
I saw a Sunseeker beached on the sand by Stockers Lake, a Yachtie lying almost on its side on the Winner about 200 yards inside the starboard hand marks and a Binliner at the Eastern end of East Head sitting high and dry at low tide while some of us sat at anchor in plenty of water and enjoyed a fantastic barbecue on the beach.

3 boats sitting on sand all within a quarter mile of each other. A day to remind all of us of the perils of the tide.

Know nothing about the guy except that he was an estate agent and the boat was going to Poole. Let the broker do the biz without me getting involved, that way the punter can't bend your ear when he discovers any faults. Of course it could have changed hands again in the two years since I sold her.

I do miss her though.

Well, we watched him come in to Newtown Creek and wander up and down looking for a bouy for a while. Then he wandered over into Clamerkin Lake, and all the bouys there were full, too. So he anchored in the middle of the river for a while, till he realized his mistake, then went over to the most deserted corner he could find before dropping anchor. Then they went off in the tender up river...

So from memory, that was all the chain he let out, but at the time he anchored, there was no wind, tide or current to move him, and at a guess, he was only in two feet of water anyway. The bows would have bottomed in the mud and presumable he mistook any bumping for the chain snatching as the anchor bit. But then again, maybe I'm being over generous, and he was just a prat.

that's very charitable, matthew. Are you sure that these boats aren't there to illustrate how many twits there are in charge of a boat, and how many more may well be still afloat more by luck than judgement?

ty for the picture

so he's in 2 ft of water, all chain so knowing his stuff he lets out 6 ft of chain on his in cocpit chain dial - ignoring the fact that his bow is 4 ft above the water...............

I think you are all being very cruel and presumptive towards this poor man. He is in fact being very thoughtful and efficient. What is the point of letting out a load of chain that will be heavy and filthy to recover. He obviously ran aground on purpose because no one would let him raft up. Having done so he was then free to paddle off in his dinghy knowing full well that provided he kept an eye on his watch and returned at the correct time the boat would still be where he left it. Leaving the legs down was a further ploy to ensure that the boat would not just float off as soon as some water reappeared. Doing things this way also made the boat impossible to steal unless the thieves came armed with a fleet of low pressure tyred wheelbarrows or a large crane.
Very clever bloke if you ask me !

Re: Same boat?

Coincidentally I was there at Newton Creek on Saturday moored opposite this guy in the picture- I must attract this sort of thing- So beware all- if you see me around get the hell out of there - (and leave me a nice empty anchorage)

Well yeah, I was just trying to be sympathetic - actually I had a bloody good laugh at the time when I saw them. But let's face it, this kind of thing COULD happen to anyone.

.......or maybe their charts were "wrong" !

Reminds me of the guys who come zooming in the Ferry Inn at Salcome in tenders or small boats. Tie up against the wall, looking cocky. Then return several beers later to find the boat dangling by it's bow, with the stern and/or outboard getting 'damp'

Great spectator sport

Yes, but it normally only happens in August when Salcombe becomes Fulham by the Sea. The small pier by the pub was done up for the Millenium but got semi demolished by rough weather this winter. Can't get the craftsmen any more you know!
