As Mssr Ramage has so astutely pointed out, I am interested in Vivien, a Broom 9/70.

Now the Boat part of things isn't really a worry, as the 9/70 seems a good all round vessel, and the 'inner stairway' design suits the Dogs a bit better than No Regrets rear stairway and side doors.

But this one has twin Volvo TMD31A's which are a bit smokey.

Now, is this something that disappears after a good run to St Kats, for example, or an endemic thing.

I'm used to a fault free boat with no smoke at all, and minimal fuel consumption!

Any 9/70 comments would be appreciated :)

My Pedro has a TMD31 and it smokes, I think they all do - unburnt diesel - but the smoke is minimal after a few minutes warming up. Its a friendly, light grey kind of smoke - quite attractive in a minimal sort of way, I think I'd miss it now I've got used to it.

Can't think why you'd need two though, one is quite sufficient to push my dutch steel along at a sprightly pace and I rarely push it over 2000revs.

But then, you've got that funny little wing engine thingy lurking in your bowels so I suppose you need something else to worry about.......

Funny, I seem to remember you sitting up on your upper con at the TVR and eulogising about how blessed you were with your new toy and how you couldn't imagine why you would ever want anything else.........:D

Well we have all done that!
I am on boat number 8 and never owned a boat longer than 3 years before and had this one 4 years......

Ah! But! The Crown is the best boat Broom ever produced. It looks great and will never date, it handles like a dream, has fantastic accommodation and although a wet boat it will take anything, what more could you ask except maybe a little more speed.
In my humble opinion if they started producing them again today there'd be a willing market for such a superb all rounder.

Totally agree Byron, thats why I still have it. The bed in the aft cabin is better than my bed at home!

Agree on the engine front though, another member of the Broom owners club has replaced the aging Perkins with a pair of Nanni 200Hp and now gets 19Knots. Very tempted by that idea......

Decided not to, this time...

As much as the thought of a slightly more modern boat appeals, the '30's shortcomings are few, and our particular one is in brilliant nick.

We'll leave her ashore this Winter, and she'll be all serviced and polished for the next few years come Spring! We know her so well, and although a little marginal on the Tidal sections, she still does the job!

Year after, perhaps...!?
