Apparently, Spirit Yachts of Ipswich, have been commissioned by an American syndicate, to build a new "Super-J", designed by S&S and based on the pre-war "Ranger"
Should be quite a sight when in action.

Spectacular, certainly...but will the Spirit 'J'-boat be racing in a field of one? :(

Really spectacular, would be a Billionaires' Yacht Club, wherein plutocrats' £15,000,000 toys race round familiar inshore courses, for prizes of no great value. More of a draw than watching overblown America's Cup cats capsizing while their crews swear at each other.

NO, it will be built to the J rule - there are already about 6 or so racing under that rule.

I suspect that it would be fabulous for 10 minutes, until the novelty of the scale and beauty of the boats wore off. Then the racing would not be a spectator sport due to the seperation between the boats and the lack of drama.

The cats at least have the potential for carnage....

I wish someone would design and build a J-class catamaran!

Imagine it...the Lagoon 130. And that great size might reduce the EC1 office-block profile which Lagoon cat windows have. :)

Something needs doing about that...

Awful. But a 130' version might be more subtle. And have room for a doubles-court on the foredeck, too...

The J rule is a joke these days. None of the boats would rate as a J class as the rule stated in the 1930's. You're right though, she won't race as a class of one. As long as the owner is sporting enough to race then he can compete with the other J's. Unfortunately most of the owners are complete spoil sports. Hence why Hanuman, Shamrock, Endeavour and Lionheart are not on the regular J circuit.

The only way to make that thing easier on the eye would be to berth it alongside the Titanic.

Why have we got pics of floating outhouses in a thread about J class yachts?

Yes they should have been on the recent cat thread.

This new J looks superb and it is great news for Spirit and Ipswich.

I hope to see her one day. Meanwhile there will be Js racing this summer in Falmouth and the Solent.
