A new Approach to Speed Limits

I have got boats of various sizes and I think there needs to be a different approach to speed limits which is related to wash made. I have just had a lovely day out on my own in my little 3.4 m rib with a 15 hp 4 stroke on the back. It is a centre console rib and with just me on board I can reach 19 Knots. Displacement speed is about 4 knots and a lovely cruising speed is 10 - 12 knots.
When on the plane this little boat makes next to no wash at all. I was on a river with generally a 8 mph speed limit which I could not achieve on the plane or indeed at displacement. So I went along at about 11 knots and kept well out of the way of other craft. No one seemed to mind and it was a lovely speed to travel.

So my point is I think speed limits should vary depending on the boat you are in:

Oh and a lot of the raggies on the river under full sail with a good breeze were zipping along over 8 mph.

What do others think

Already invented.
I've seen several places over the Pond where the limit is "X mph" or "no wash", whatever is reached first.
You might not like it though, because in your example, as I understand, you should have cruised at 4mph.

But at Displacement I make more wash than when on the plane. Remember this is a little 3.4 m rib

Speed limits in many cases aren't just about wash. Often you simply wouldn't want boats travelling fast, whatever the wash (or lack of) situation.

I refer the honorable member to the discussion on another thread about how the amount of energy rises dramatically the faster one goes.

Whilst I kind of agree with you and my little Fletcher makes far less wake at 40 knots than it does at 8 knots, it also takes far longer to stop or turn at high speed.

As stated above, 'sensible' speed limits are far too difficult to police and rely on everyone acting sensibly.

We have a speed limit of 8 Kn in out harbour and a no wake zone in the marina but every body ignores even the water police and no one checks. Very annoying when you are up the mast in the marina and some one passes you making a giant wake
