Described as a Reckless maneuver. I am not sure it was as bad as the telephoto shot appears. Certainly Ninja the MB24 on the right is well over powered and has too much furling jib out.
The Spacesailer 22 on the left is better controlled in the blowy conditions. Olewill in Castle 650 closest to camera is under one reef and no 4 hank on jib with 4 crew.
The location is called Blackwall Reach named after that stretch of lower Thames. Wind was probably around the 20 knots gusting higher. I don't recall the actual day but we had some blowy races before Christmas. It does emphasise the need to set up a boat with reefs etc in anticipation of a blow. Gavin in the MB24 is one of the few using furling jib in our fleet. Races are short like 2 hours and wind is predictable. 40 seasons of this madness and ol'will is still enjoying it.
