Having modernised our study at home and fitted a new bookcase, I set a section aside for my 300 odd PBOs stemming the period 1967 to 2002. When they were all set up in chronological order I realised that by looking at the spines, it was possible to trace my personal circumstances by the number of PBOs per year,

Year no of issues Events
11 Started to read PBO and took over fathers motor cruiser.
10 Cruised West Coast of Scotland
9 Sold motor cruiser, bought 4 ton sloop
10 Great time spent sailing
1 Got married!
4 Bought caravan!
7 Getting fed up with caravan
4 Still no boat and getting even more fed up with caravan
4 As above but bought bare hull in September
10 Building new boat
10 Launched new boat
4 Daughter born January
8 Changed jobs for more dosh
8 Son born, boat laid up
6 Boat still laid up
12 Boat still laid up, suffering withdrawal symptoms.
9 Boat still laid up
4 Built extension, boat still laid up
5 Changed jobs and launched boat
8 Boat now in full commission and using for family holidays
7 Children very busy swimming, not much time for boats
6 Children even spending more time swimming, boat unused.
7 As above, boat used even less.
10 Children loosing interest in swimming, we go boating again
11 Beginning to look for bigger boat
11 Bought Westerly Pentland
11 Now buying YM as well as PBO and enjoying sailing Pentland
to 2002 average about 10 to 11 copies per year.

When I total up the number of issues I have bought at their present cost, it works out at about £3000 I have spent on PBO. Could have nearly bought a new engine! Will probably stop buying PBO as Book Case is now full.
