A member of my club has donated his old bilge keel Westerly Konsort to the Red Cross who have asked the club to auction it. The boat is in poor condition after several years on the hard, but it would make an interesting and rewarding restoration project for any one with the inclination.

The boat is sold "as seen and inspected" with no warranty given by the NUSC, the Red Cross nor myself - you really do need to give the boat a good inspection before deciding to make a bid. Local yacht clubs have been circulated with the details.

The auction takes place on the 21st August at 1400 hours at Newport Uskmouth Sailing Club, Newport, Gwent. The boat can be viewed on the 7th, 10th, and 15th and 17th August. The contact is the commodore on this link.

I hope PBO/YBW don't mind this post - all the money from the auction is going to the Red Cross :)

Had a quick shufty round the boat and there's far less work to do than I had been told. Can't comment on the engine though it does look reasonably clean and was working 3 years ago. The outside of the boat is a serious polishing job with some of the wooden rubbing strip needing replacing. Rigging and sails need doing, but the inside is a cleaning job with the usual Westerly headlinig issue in a limited area.

Anyone interested must check things out for themselves but my guess would be 6 to 8k on a DIY basis to bring up to scratch excluding engine. And if the boat goes for less than 10k ............... Decent profit to be had.

If I were younger I would definitely bid. But any bidder really must check it out for themselves - the above figures are guesses and should not be relied on.

Just bringing this back to the top of the list. It really does look like a good and rewarding project for someone who turns up and bids this coming Saturday.
