Last one, even though it just showed a narrow passage and a few trees each side, turned out to be too easy. Was got within a couple of posts. So you may like to try this one if your weekend is wet.

First clue is that it is not in the UK and the area is known of by many yachtsmen around the world. More clues (if needed /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif) when I get back from the boat late your Sunday morning.

No, you don't have to go through a lock.

To make it easier before I go to the boat in a few hours will add that it is in the Southern Hemisphere (but is not NZ where many know I live).

Hell it looks a little like knysna lagoon I thought it must be a lake and if you dont need a lock it has to be a lagoon. There is no way in the Southern hemisphere this is not completley sheltered. On the other hand there are quite sheltered places in South America with which I am not familiar.

Having had another look I can see the very distinct lines of a blue gum tree which is endemic to Australia so I give up if it is. Actually if I can guess again because of the bluegums I would say somewhere in Aus but the hills in the background remind me very much of knysna.

Hi Das_Booted one, Brendan is on the right track, it is in Australia.

Also, keep in mind, I said it is a place known of by many yachtsmen around the world.

OK, Big clue before I shut down to go to the boat for the rest of the weekend.

Many Englishmen sailed past here in the 19th Century but not many do now.

Well, despite alot of views, either people have no idea at all of where this is or are not interested (smile}.

So, if I add that a well known yacht race finishes near here -----

It looks like any number of places I visited north of Sydney this year. However, from your last clue it must be near Hobart.

Close enough I think Woody. It was taken in the outer Southern reaches of Hobart Harbour.

To be exact (and I was not expecting anyone to know this detail) it is North West Bay which is sheltered from Storm Bay outside Hobart by Bruny Island. The Sydney Hobart race fleet enter on the other side of Bruny Island (the hills in the distance) to proceed into the Derwent River and Hobart.

My clue about the 19th century Englishmen sailing past, referred to the transported convicts. Recently I read for the first time the novel "For the Term of His Natural Life" written in the 19th Century by Marcus Clarke and is based on convict life in the area. Was a novel I could not put down, one of the better ones I have read. Is still in print (at least have seen it on the shelves in Oz) but also available free as an ebook for downloading on Project Gutenburg and Blackmask Online.
