I have gas struts on the lids of my fridge and freezer. I decided to apply a little silicon grease to the piston and the struts instantly failed!

Is silicon grease a disaster on struts or was it coincidence?

Otherwise they appear in perfect condition and are stainless. Is it worth having them regassed or buy new?

Thank you

Is it a possibility that it was internal friction that was actually holding them up rather than gas pressure and when you lubricanted them this was no longer the case?

Thanks guys. Well it was coincidence. There are two for each lid and having removed them all one on each lid has lost compression. One alone was not sufficient to have any noticeable effect. Thanks for the link and replacements to order.
