We'll be bringing boat down with the owner to southern Portugal, hopefully leaving 8th/9th.

Will be m/sailing if wind drops and was wondering what are diesel prices like along atlantic Spanish/Portuguse coast.

The owner will be wanting to leave boat for several weeks whilst returning to uk and then continuing his journey to canaries and then across to Caribbean.

I've personally enjoyed staying on a mooring at Alcoutim but understand there's a time limit for lying alongside, is that still the case and if so are there any spaces alongside in Sanlucar?

Failing this what are best marina rates like at present - or would Bruce's be better option to leave boat for say a month/6weeks ?

Thanks all

Alcoutim----1 week,then price doubles.
Bruce's----if you want to lift oui. Don't think he has moorings.
San Lucar---only if you are lucky and are here at the right time.
Lagos is doing better summer short term rates this year,I'm told.
Possible to leave boat on the anchor here,if someone agrees to keep an eye on her.

Drop the anchor in Alvor lagoon 2M east of Lagos, it's free, and the small town has all to offer.

Great little place, but I wouldn't leave the boat there! Last August, boatson anchor, boats on moorings landed on the beach! The holding can be patchy.

Same day the Faro airport roof blew off.
Next day ,my Delta dragged and I nearly landed on the beach.

Diesel prices in Spain are usually significantly cheaper than Portugal. Everything boaty in the general area of Lisbon is more expensive than other areas of Portugal, with the exception of Vilamoura on the Algarve. All diesel in marinas seems to be road diesel. I would recommend that you plan on using a marina when you leave the boat for several weeks. None are cheap until after September but you can probably haggle if you turn up at Albufeira Marina which is modern, secure, conveniently located but somewhat charmless. Lagos is an attractive, well run marina and is excellent for stores, maintenance, security and shoreside facilities but is usually expensive in summer although there are some deals this summer. It can also get a bit noisy during peak season. From my experience over many years in this area Lagos Marina does seem to attract more attention from the authorities of all types although others on this forum dispute this. I recommend that wherever you go in Portugal you have all your crew and boat papers in order and up to date. It might be worth considering a marina just over the border into Spain such as Ayamonte which is a pleasant marina and has a reasonable chandlery nearby.
Fair winds.

As far as I could see all the way down the Atlantic coast you are buyin g road diesel often from garages so prices are close to normal car/truck prics and in Portugal almos the same. As for marina costs Albufeira is usually the cheapest, but be aware the front office staff can't do deals but if the bosses are in will try and get a better deal for you for longer term stops. Bruces is always cheapest but for shorter stops you need to factor in both lift in/out costs and tide times. Good prices for transfers can be found on line for Albufeira marina using the marina apartments reception as the pick up point. The local bus service in Albufeira runs from the marina every half hour and takes you into town and the supermarkets.

Sines is much cheaper and there are a few liveaboards there who can advise on getting to airports for flights home.

Lift out in Bruce's is an option but expensive for short say but, he does have a mooring near 21 buoy and may well be willing to rent it out for a month. Alternatively, there's a German guy, Paul, who has some moorings for rent at Foz on the Guadiana but unfortunately I don't have his phone no. - maybe someone else can help out with that? Ayamonte marina is much cheaper than Algarve ones and still easy transport to Faro Airport.

Diesel about 20cents/L cheaper in Spain than Portugal

Great place to stop over - but if you have any draught the entrance can be a bit hairy!

Privately owned so was always a bit more expensive than Ayamonte - but that may have changed.

Thanks for the replies, Sines may well tick the boxes for leaving boat and setting out point for Canaries.

Wouldn't recommend him to leave at anchor but if he wants to "do" Ayamonte, Rompido, Punta Umbria area, they could be considered - will try to find monthly prices

Trip up the Guardiana will probably be on the cards.

Hasta luego

Left El Rompido this morning, back to Faro. Channel dredged last year and with 1.5M draft we were told HW +/-4 OK. Personally, I'd stick to HW +/- 3.

As already said, staff are excellent and there's free wi-fi. Daily rate in marina 11.5m about 28 euro.

With 2.3m always a bit cautious

Need to be a bit cautious right along the coast this year, 3 new tuna nets now in place. One off Culatra, one between the original Japanese net and Tavira and now one a few miles offshore on Spanish side of the Guadiana. Last one is just about on track Mazagon to Faro.

Portimao???

We spent 12 months in Portimao marina in 2003/4 when it was very cheap, easy access any state of the tide & friendly staff, well it was then, happy days.
