A diesel question for Guernsey residents

I usually fill my tanks in St Peter Port on the way through because the price is so much better than UK or France. I vaguely remember it being red but I'm not certain of that.

How will you be affected if the French follow Belgium's example and levy fines for traces of red in the tanks?

I thought it was white - but more or less tax free because of the status of the CI's?

I'm still trying to work out if the Belgium thing applies to non-EU people, and hope the French will be good neighbours.

This is a good point. What happens to the American who is has sailed over to cruise around Europe. He knows not of the red issue and HAS to fill up in the UK, his next port of call is Belgium. What next skipper?

Admittedly it's been a couple of years (2008), but when I filled up at SPP (Boatworks) the diesel was white.

Someone posted on here a few days ago that two US boats were fined in Belgium for having red in their tanks.

I imagine the cost of installing a tank and pump for white diesel would be prohibitive. You can arrange for bulk supply of fuel to be delivered via a tanker which will meet your boat at Abraham's Bosom in St Samson's harbour, but it would not be as cheap as our red fuel.

But I'll ask a few questions tomorrow.

why is it red in Guernsey - do they have taxes on motor car fuel? I thought they didnt and all diesel for whatever use was the same tax wise

Mind you, unless Guernsey wants to lose all its French yottie visitors, they will take the dye out anyway.

I was certain the diesel was white last summer when I filled up in SPP. I have just checked the Boatworks website, and they say quite clearly that it is duty free white diesel that they sell.

I was sure it was white in 2010. When I filled last year in SPP it seemed to be red or maybe the back froth was just from existing fuel. However I'm sure Guernseyman would be the man in the know.

I filled up with diesel in StPP in July 2011 and still have most of it in my tank and its definitely red!
