Some tools you simply can't buy. I needed to scarph some wood and make some pin rail so I built a scaprhing jig and a pin rail boring jig. Hope this helps others.

Not sure how it works, but certainly looks impressive.

My Mum had a scarf making machine, but it used wool instead of pine...:D

Start with a 7' ceiling in a basement. Next, don't throw anything out, and don't be too proud to prowl through rubbish bins and dumpsters. Then build shelves, fill shelves, screw hooks to joists overhead to hang that which will not fit on shelves. Last, convince wife that every tool you buy to build boats or restore cars is a- absolutely vital and b- will be used on home DIY projects when the boats are built and the cars are restored.
When wife catches on, start all over again in new smaller quarters with half as much stuff, but no house reno projects to worry about.

You should see my brother in laws garage work shop up in Severn Orillia. He used to have a basement one just like the pic then when he moved he installed a girder chain lift and installed a full set of wood working tools.
In his retirement he does some lovely cabinet making and is now getting commissions.

That's the problem on this side of the pond. Few houses have basements.

I want to build a bigger workshop to replace the shed at the bottom of my garden. Trouble is, lack of space means it will be close enough to the neighbours for planning regs to demand brick or concrete instead of wood (for fire protection) and that gets very spendy.

With the cost of land over here I still don't understand why we don't all have basements / cellars. ok cost may be a factor but given that we build houses with rooms too small to swing a cat in and still don't have cupboard space why the hell not! Utilities like boiler, heating pumps, laundry and washing machine etc all in the basement, storage for the mower and winter storage for garden furniture ....... frees up lots of space in the working area of the house.

Suppose it's all too logical.
