Well, maybe not so daft, but if you don't ask you don't find out.

1. Navtex aerials. Do they interfere with each other? I gather that they need to be over 30 cm from another vertical metal suface (does this include VHF twig?) but does that 30 cm cover a gap 'twixt whip and the stumpy thing as well?

2. Engine room insulation. All Gold now has her nice new (to me) diesel which will probably make an awful racket compared to the petrol purr. I've obtained several sheets of that lead/foam stuff (boat jumble bargain) and assume it goes on the underside of the deck boards. Does it need to go on the vertical surfaces in the engine bay as well? If so, presumably _not_ covering up pipes and cables etc.

Thanks for any help.

Two beers please, my friend is paying.

Andrew,

I went through a soundproofing exercise on an old Freeman which re-engined with a diesel several years ago.

Basically the more you can cocoon the engine the better. So the soundproofing needs to go ALL round, even a shaped ply false bulkhead (with soundproofing) dropped down over the aft end of the gearbox if it is shaft drive.

Any gaps around the hatch must be sealed to keep sound in, you can buy flat spongey adhesive tape for the purpose. Control Cables which pass through the foam need to be wrapped in acoustic tape where they pass through the bulkhead to prevent mechanical transmission and drumming. Also, loose loops of throttle or gear cable which touch the outside of the hull (or any bulkhead) can transmit an incredible amount of noise.

When you have finished do not forget to ensure that the airflow to the engine is still unimpeded.
