We were planning to aim for Holland in the summer and go on one of the club cruises. That was until a quick bit of pre voyage checking was carried out. You never know if you may be coming back on your own for any reason, so need a passage plan other than the usual ( go on admit it) follow the boat in front wheeze.
Its about 120 miles from the Mudway to the other side and at 8 knots it will take an eternity to get there.
So thats now off the agenda and its likely a tour of the East coast.
Need either more time or faster boat. !
Preferably both.

I was once told that boating is about the journey not how quick you can reach the destination but I have to agree, for those of us still working at least, a faster boat is often desired, particularly when contemplating summer cruises to foreign shores.

Humber, Thames and Zzzzzzzz.

The other problem for those of us working so that others may enjoy "the triple lock" on top of their final salary pensions :) is needing to be back by a certain time, must be nice to listen the 05.30 weather forecast....think..... maybe tomorrow and pull the duvet over head in your nice warm bunk. :)

8 knots... I dream about doing 8 knots when I am delivering Dutch Barge across from IJmuiden to Teddington.
In one of those old girl's the journey time is usually 40 - 44 hours.

Hi Chris, thanks for your comments. Would take us around 15 hours actual travelling time and thats ignoring the hour or so from Rochester to Sheerness.
Just bit to long especially with the rather limited time available to cruise the area once over there.
Boats considerably faster then us are normally our companions and passage speed does tend to creep up en route.
Similar problem on our annual pilgrimage to the Thames ,we normally have to turn around before Reading and miss perhaps some of the best bits of The Thames.
In the dozen or so visits so far have yet to get to Byrons.:(

Yea been there, done that. The last time we cruised to "the other side of the channel" we had to leave the boat behind and get the ferry back due to bad weather and having to be back at work on Monday, friends who didn't have such an issue said the sea was lovely coming back on the Tuesday :(

Re: Humber, Thames and Zzzzzzzz.

Had to come home early on the Dunkerque trip.
Only way back was taxi to /station to Lille/Ashford or taxi to Calais/ferry and then train to home.
No foot passengers From Dunkerque to UK
