...wanted €980 +vat for a new, Volvo Valeo Paris-Rhone alternator but he had to order it from Athens and had no idea how long it would take to arrive.

I was told by a neighbour at Gouvia that he had bought a spurious copy, probably Chinese in Nidri for €265. It was still working fine in October 2009 so I can't comment upon it's quality.

Now, today, here has arrived from the good ol' US of A a GENUINE Valeo Paris-Rhone brand new, boxed and labelled alternator from a company called Budda's of Norwich Connetticutt for £265 inc carriage and vat. I ordered it on 02/02/2010 and it arrived at Parcelforce this morning. Excellent.

Do NOT buy from over-charging ex-pat chandlers in Levkas is the lesson I've learned.

Lesson I've learnt is to shop around before you buy. Prices vary considerably and you don't have to buy from the nearest chandlery.

I checked out dozens of places for anti-fouling and found that an ex-pat chandlers in Lefkas was the most competitive.

Thanks for the post Charles. I have been reluctant to order stuff from the states because I was worried about hold ups with customs.
I am interested how you arranged the quick delivery particuarly the details of how the VAT payment was made .

nidri,

spending the winter in India ,doing the final commissioning on a 34vds.How I wish for the overpriced chandeliers of europe. the average chandlery in europe has as many product lines as the small supermarrket. with how many feet through the doors?
enjoy

Here's another clue: one of the 2 footballing brothers has a daughter called Sue, who's a meteorologist, and who has presented the weather forecast on BBC TV...

I take it that there is no football fans out there then...... My guess would be Geordies lads, one played for MUFC and the other for LFC......All this and no prize.....!
