Just doing the impeller on my Alpha 1 Gen 2 Stern-drive and when I pulled of the bottom of the leg a small piece of metal dropped on the floor. I can't see an obvious position for it and it's always possible that it was on the gravel drive anyway.

The picture is below and the straight edge is 2.2 inches long (5.7 cms).

Anybody have any clues what it is or should I just put the leg back together and get on with boating.

Go to Mercruiserparts.com and you can find exploded parts diagrams of the alpha drives.

Definitely half of an exhaust flap, check inside the exhaust bellows all the way in to make sure the other part isn’t lying there. Either way you need a new one or two if its a V6/8.
Not as expensive as when I once found the exhaust turbine from a Mercruiser 1.7 diesel in the exhaust bellows, the turbo shaft had broken and that half blew out of the turbo!

4586.jpgWe had a Bayliner bowrider 21 years back with 5.7 V8 and when the exhaust flaps blew out we had water in the rear 2 cylinders caused by slowing down to quickly when water skiing . I think that engine combo may have been a bit heavy for that hull , but it was a quick boat .

Thanks guys for all your replies.

I had the exhaust shutter done a few years ago after it overheated and spat bits of black plastic out of the exhaust. My mechanic changed the flapper at the time but I'm not sure how much metal was recovered.*

Perhaps this piece could be from then and has worked it's way through to the drive, over the years. I guess the only way to check is to get inside the riser and look.

I thought the exhaust flaps were always a hard black plastic. This part looks metal, possibly stainless. Are exhaust flaps ever metal?

The part in the picture is metal although if you turn it up the other way, there are 3 black plastic marks which makes it look like the metal was embedded in black plastic.

Just to round this off. With the help of a friend, I got the hoses off and there was a reasonable condition shutter valve, in it's entirety and in the right position. It would appear that the piece that I found in the lower leg was actually from the original, all those years ago. As I had the new one and everything was apart I swapped them.

Of course, the bad news is, I need to replace the riser. The original is rustier than a rusty thing. I do hope the manifold is OK. The joys of saltwater boating I guess.
