Having bought a second hand sailing boat last year (actually, fourth hand) I've modified a good deal of the electrical system as well as making other changes. When the mast was taken down for transporting the boat by road, a few days after purchase, we could see that the masthead tricolour/anchor lights and mid-mast steaming/foredeck lights were dilapidated.

I agreed with the riggers' suggestion that these lights should be replaced and they fitted plastic bodied units. The boat has now been in the water since September.

The new lights have been troublesome. Today I removed both. The masthead unit had so much water in it that switching on one circuit would cause both lamps to glow. The mid-height unit already has some corrosion on the metal parts.

I have fettled and refitted both units, leaving out the anchor light lamp so that the masthead unit serves as a tricolour only. Next winter the mast will be coming down and I expect to fit an LED Lopolight or similar. There seems to be a good selection of masthead LED lights available, but far fewer mid-height units.

Can anyone recommend a good quality mid-mast steaming/foredeck light fitting? It doesn't have to be LED.

Aquasignal Series 40 and 41 Are Good Units.

I use both the Aquasignal 40 and 41 Series of lights with good reliability. Most of the boats that I have worked on for over many years use this make.

Like all things marine they need a periodic inspection to check for security.

Examples http://www.purplemarine.com/Category.aspx?categoryname=Aquasignal It absolutely pays to shop around. My local Marina wanted £240 for the 24 v version which I got for £89 pounds on line.
