hi

im aware there are already posts that address similar issues however i was hoping someone may be able to give more specific advice

i have recently bought a second hand evinrude 90hp the tilt trim works intermittently the engine raises and lowers on the tilt however will only move 2-4 inches before the pump cuts out. i then have to leave it up to three muinets before trying again and it will work again for the 2-4 inches of movement.

i have checked the oil levels and topped up and attempted to bleed, however the intermittent cutouts made this a very slow process
.

ive also checked the circuit and there is defiantly power getting to the pumps motor.

im now at a loss for what to try... any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum.

It could be something simple, the trim motors are supposed to be sealed but if its an older V4 engine water could have got in. If you are quite handy, take the motor off, open it up and check it out, you will probably find loads of rust in there causing issues with connectivity. Clean up the rust and it should sort it.

If its a newer model then my brother had a 90 Evinrude Etec with similar problems. I think it turned out to be a damaged ram. The casing was dented and in the end it just stopped working completely. New ram sorted it out, about £300 plus fitting.

I had a similar problem on a 2006 Evinrude Etec, the casing holding the trim pump had rusted and was letting in water, hence the intermittent and weak operation. There was corrosion on the outside of the pump casing so it was self-evident, apparently a common problem as the casing is not substantial.

thank for the advice , after taking the motor apart i cleaned and re tested to find the fault was still apparent, after a little research on electric motors in general i found there to be an issue to be with the thermo cut out switch being warn and so have now replaced the switch and the motor works fine. quite a quick and relatively inexpensive, soo a good ending all round
