I had my 9.9 Yamaha 4 - stroke electric start outboard serviced :
  • Lugs (in clamps on mounting bracket) to hold engine to transom freed, lubricated
  • Engine block oil changed
  • Foot oil changed
  • Water impeller replaced
  • Hydraulic fluid filled
  • Spark plugs replaced
  • Gear changer freed up
  • Throttle freed up
  • Carburettor removed and cleaned
  • Engine run as a test.
I only supplied the two spark plugsTotal charge +/- US$245.00

I have the in line gas filter to replace.

What are service costs like around your area?

The chap is installing the gear change throttle cables, connecting fuel (line dry rotten), fuel tank(portable) uplift broken inside, cylinders are full of oil.

It is now running. 😁

He is adjusting the idle revs and will now recheck the oil levels.

I am not particularly keen on my 9.9 Yamaha 4 - stroke electric start outboard.

It has electric start and remote control etc BUT it does NOT have a manual pull start (alternative start).

So if for any reason your battery goes flat then you cannot start there engine. Then I would have to sail the Corsair F-27 in to mooring .

Fortunately I do have some experience in doing so having sailed with the late Philip Walwyn on KATE.

Never realised how much I was learning, and what a great 'teacher/instructor' he was, at that time.

I do have battery 'jump start' pack, but even then I still to not trust electronics. 😣

Is there an aftermarket pack to allow you to fit on to the top of the outboard to provide it with an alternative manual pull start ?

They do have the capability (or at least my model did) of manual starting. It's not a recoil starting line, but rather like a Seagull, you wind a cord with a handle on one end and a knot in the other round a groove in the top of the flywheel with a notch in it for the knot at the end of the rope to go into. I seem to remember that after you have taken the cowl off there is another black plastic cover over the flywheel that can be removed after unscrewing a thumbscrew. Take that cover off and there is your flywheel. It's fairly obvious how it works once you have accessed it. My Yam 9.9 came with the starting line but it's simple enough to make another one if you don't have it (about 1m length). Mine was a 2000 model. Hopefully yours has the same arrangement.

I preferred the manual start on my Tohatsu 9.8 that replaced it which although electric start had a proper recoil pull starter. However, neither engine ever needed manually starting other than practice.

Bet you can stick a battery drill on the crankshaft top nut too — sometimes 😄

Sounds fair pricing . A service is a lube job and an impeller . You got a components unseize/recommissioning ??

@Rum_Pirate the electrics on modern outboards are normally very good so more likely to have a problem with the battery. Post 4 seems the same as my honda 30. I suspect that I could hand start it but it would be fiddly and so far I have never had to do it for over 16 years.
You could always post a picture of the engine with no cover on and we could make a comment or there might be something in a manual if you have one.
