Its just had a bit of a blow here in southampton. Southampton EGHI has recorded a maximum gust of 84 of the aforementioned knots.

Seems to be calming down abit now...

I learnt recently that the wind at 90 mph has twice the power of the wind at 60 mph. We get 40 - 60 mph winds fairly regularly but to me this explains why big winds make so much news.

We were in W Cowes when it came through. Returned to boat late pm to find 2 S*****l boats rafted outside to leeward without any shore lines. Managed to track crew down (in the Anchor, of course) and they cheerfully returned to put some lines ashore. Glad they did when it blew up during the night.

Cracking sail back yesterday pm/evening under triple reefed genoa only with plenty of wind as a cold front came through, and not a single other leisure boat in sight. Quite lively seas when out of the lee of IOW and approaching Chi Bar LW+2.

Made me think once again how great the Solent is - a gale of wind and almost flat seas! My nephew and his dad thoroughly enjoyed it. Total weekend engine use 21 minutes.
